Tucked on the top floor of a warehouse in an ungentrified stretch of Long Island City, a block from the mouth of the Queens Midtown Tunnel, is the world’s oldest Yiddish bookstore. It was not the bookstore’s choice to be there next to car repair shops and furniture warehouses. In 2010, when Manhattan rents became too steep for ordinary people, the CYCO Yiddish Book Center, like so many others, was forced to move. Long Island City fit the bill.
