Throughout life, stem cells in our bone marrow replenish white and red blood cells that circulate throughout the body, and certain mutations in stem cells can promote cardiovascular disease. With age, these stem cells can undergo genetic mutations. Most of these acquired mutations will never provoke a disease. It takes multiple mutations in certain specific genes to cause a blood cancer, such as leukemia.
