A family Fourth of July barbecue in Coney Island turned into a mass shooting Saturday night, leaving eight people wounded, including four children, police said. The shooting happened shortly after 10 p.m. in the courtyard of a residential complex near Surf Avenue and West 30th Street. Police said a man wearing a ski mask fired multiple rounds into the courtyard, where families had gathered for a holiday barbecue.

Human remains discovered in chimney of Queens public school

A Queens neighborhood was left in shock after a body was discovered inside a chimney at a public school Tuesday morning. "It looks like a scene out of a TV show. It's disturbing. It's scary, my kids are disturbed," said Merissa Terranova, whose children attend the school. The body was discovered in the chimney of P.S./I.S. 113 in Glendale around 9 a.m., according to police.

Red Hook residents face heat wave without community pool

The Red Hook Pool, which is 90 years old this summer, was closed for most of last summer because its old pipe infrastructure needed repairs. As most of the city's pools opened officially on Saturday, the Red Hook Pool did not. The Parks Department says mechanical issues are to blame. The pool is just one of several pools citywide that are closed at the start of the pool season.
