Imagine the longest lineup you’ve ever seen, then triple it – that’s what greeted those serving ice cream topped with sweet strawberry sauce at this year’s Strawberry Fest. The free, family-friendly event drew more than 10,000 people for the 59th edition of the long-running Saanich tradition, held Sunday (July 5) at Elk/Beaver Lake Regional Park. More than 4,000 servings of ice cream and strawberry topping were handed out.

Victoria’s Mile Zero Monument was the scene of a major police response on Friday (July 3) after an assault in which, Abigail Urquhart said, a man wielding a machete injured three of her friends, prompting the deployment of about 20 police cruisers, a canine unit and drones. Victoria Police said two suspects were arrested at the scene, including one youth. Neither of those arrested was among the injured. Both remain in custody, police said in a July 4 news release.
