High-resolution metabolomics of maternal polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) exposure and preterm birth in the Atlanta African American Maternal-Child Cohort
Abstract Black and African American women face a dual burden of elevated risk of preterm birth (PTB, <37 weeks of gestation) and exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), endocrine-disrupting pollutants. Although prenatal PBDE levels have been linked to PTB, underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We examined serum PBDE levels and metabolomic profiles in 177 pregnant participants (18–40 years old) from the Atlanta African American Maternal-Child Cohort (2014–2019).
Newborn metabolomic perturbations associated with prenatal tobacco smoke exposure and early birth
Abstract Exposure to tobacco smoke during pregnancy is an established risk factor for early birth including early term birth (ETB) and preterm birth (PTB). However, the underlying molecular mechanisms are minimally understood. In this study, we aimed to characterize the newborn metabolomic associations with early pregnancy maternal tobacco exposure biomarkers and early birth in 269 mother-child pairs in the Atlanta African American Maternal-Child Cohort (2016–2020).

Pregnant African American (AA) women are disproportionately exposed to higher levels of select PFAS and experience higher rates of low birth weight than other races/ethnicities.
