Custom mouthguards in sports - British Dental Journal
We read with interest the recent article on ‘Incidence of maxillofacial trauma related to kickboxing and the efficacy of protective equipment'.1 We recently had the opportunity to provide custom mouthguards to two professional basketball players of the Indian national team, and our experience highlighted a significant gap in awareness regarding oral protection in contact sports.

A literature review and expert consensus statement on diagnostics in suspected metal implant allergy
INTRODUCTION Metal-implant-related hypersensitivity reactions have been suggested to encompass local reactions (such as local dermatitis, disturbed wound healing, effusion, swelling, reduced range of motion, pain and aseptic loosening) and systemic manifestations such as haematogenous contact dermatitis.1-7 Most of these clinical signs and symptoms are rather non-specific and may relate other than to allergy for example to infection, mechanical failure or foreign body reaction such as immune...

Students disappointed that Student Union piano often locked away behind closed doors
The piano was previously openly housed in the Student Union’s Flag Room Following a long and strenuous engineering exam, Salim Zedni and Jeff Naranjo headed toward Student Union 145-A to unwind by playing the campus piano. But when they got there, the two senior computer engineering majors were met with locked metal doors instead of ivory piano keys.
Head and neck radiotherapy consent: a national survey
To view the full text, please login as a subscribed user or purchase a subscription. Click here to view the full text on ScienceDirect. The Fourth National Audit Project showed that 39% of major airway complications involved head and neck patients.1 Many of these patients will receive radiotherapy as part of their treatment. Radiotherapy to the head and neck can cause contractures, rigidity, and distortion of oropharyngeal tissue, interfering with facemask ventilation and laryngoscopy.

Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina; The Perfect Small-Town Beach - Pathfinders Travel Magazine
North Carolina is known for its beautiful beaches, finger-licking barbecue and delicious, fresh seafood. Wrightsville Beach is an hour and a half from 1-95, that congested north-south artery with which anyone who lives on the East Coast is all too familiar. It has been called one of the country’s best small-town beaches, family friendly destinations and one of the most accessible beaches. It’s a small island of about 2,500 year-round residents near Wilmington.
Op-Ed: Political and public solutions threaten school safety
After the school shooting in Parkland, Fla., political and public opinions on making schools safe are proving to be as misguided as the broader school reform movement that has failed our students. One poll shows the public is divided on arming teachers; however, as the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Maureen Downey reports, even police in active shooter incidences are mostly inaccurate, especially under pressure.
Immunoprofile of α‐Gal‐ and B‐antigen‐specific responses differentiates red meat‐allergic patients from healthy individuals
The galactose‐α‐1,3‐galactose (α‐Gal) epitope is involved in red meat allergy. As α‐Gal is structurally similar to the blood group B‐antigen, we explored the relationship between the immune responses to α‐Gal‐ and the B‐antigen in red meat‐allergic patients compared to healthy A/O or B blood donors. Fifteen healthy donors were IgE positive to α‐Gal, of which 3 had blood group B. The allergic patients had significantly higher α‐Gal IgE levels compared to the healthy donors.

Keratoacanthoma management: results of a survey of UK dermatologists and surgeons
Distinction of keratoacanthoma (KA) from squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is challenging. Management is controversial, with some advocating prompt surgical excision and others monitoring to allow for spontaneous resolution1. The controversy is compounded by rare reports of metastasis2. And yet the benign natural history of KA is supported by various studies, including a systematic review of 455 cases with no cases of metastasis or death1, and observational studies confirming spontaneous resolution1.
CCSD plan for teachers won’t work
The most telling aspect of Charleston County School District’s announcement about holding teachers accountable for student test scores may be in the second paragraph of Paul Bowers’s coverage: “District leaders say they don’t want to fire anyone — particularly not in the midst of a statewide teacher shortage that’s only getting worse.”While it appears some are aware of the unintended consequences of new education policy, we must be concerned that such awareness has not helped better inform...
The reliability of the Cutaneous Dermatomyositis Disease Area and Severity Index (CDASI) among dermatologists, rheumatologists and neurologists
Previous studies have shown that skin disease in dermatomyositis (DM) is best assessed using the Cutaneous Dermatomyositis Disease Area and Severity Index (CDASI). Although the CDASI has been validated for use by dermatologists, it has not been validated for use by other physicians such as rheumatologists and neurologists, who also manage patients with DM and assess skin activity in clinical trials. To assess the reliability of the CDASI among dermatologists, rheumatologists and neurologists.

Relationships between adult asthma and oxidative stress markers and pH in exhaled breath condensate: a systematic review
Oxidative stress has a recognized role in the pathophysiology of asthma. Recently, interest has increased in the assessment of pH and airway oxidative stress markers. Collection of exhaled breath condensate (EBC) and quantification of biomarkers in breath samples can potentially indicate lung disease activity and help in the study of airway inflammation, and asthma severity.
Beware of ‘turnaround’ school districts
South Carolina has a shameful history regarding vulnerable populations of students being served in our high-poverty, racial minority areas of the state, notably our “Corridor of Shame” along I-95. That neglect eventually prompted a court battle in S.C. over adequately funding high-poverty schools.

School choice lessons for Charleston
Mention a coastal city notable for its diverse cultural history and the twin scars of natural disasters and human-made racism and generational poverty, and most people will think New Orleans, especially during the recent 10-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
Largest Asteroid May Be 'Mini Planet' with Water Ice
This is a NASA Hubble Space Telescope color image of Ceres, the largest object in the asteroid belt. Astronomers enhanced the sharpness in these Advanced Camera for Surveys images to bring out features on Ceres' surface, including brighter and darker regions that could be asteroid impact features. The observations were made in visible and ultraviolet light between December 2003 and January 2004. The colors represent the differences between relatively red and blue regions.
