Abstract Opisthorchis viverrini infection is primarily associated with hepatobiliary disease, but its renal consequences remain poorly defined. We investigated kidney injury in chronically infected Syrian golden hamsters using biochemical, histological, ultrastructural, and transcriptomic analyses. Hamsters infected nine months previously showed mild changes in conventional markers, including non-significant increases in serum creatinine and urinary protein.

The epidemiology of the Streptococcus agalactiae bacterium (group B Streptococcus [GBS]) in Southeast Asia differs from that traditionally seen in the literature. Investigations after the foodborne outbreak of GBS sepsis in 2015 in Singapore concluded that GBS sepsis is primarily a foodborne infection of adults in parts of Southeast Asia (1). The Singapore outbreak was associated with consumption of raw freshwater fish (2,3).

Highlights Halting the transmission of O. viverrini is crucial to preventing cases of cholangiocarcinoma, yet there is no consensus on the best strategies for large-scale parasite control. Quantitative modelling can provide insights and guide control programmes more rapidly and using fewer resources than clinical trials. To give reliable output, models depend on making accurate assumptions and using parameters inferred from relevant datasets. Mathematical models of O.
