The global distribution of mercury (Hg) as an environmental pollutant has been extensively documented in previous studies (Driscoll et al., 2013). In anaerobic aquatic ecosystems, such as wetlands and lake sediments, inorganic Hg is susceptible to methylation by Hg-methylating bacteria, producing methylmercury (MeHg), a highly toxic compound (Parks et al., 2013). The subsequent bioaccumulation of MeHg in the food chain poses a significant risk to human health (Karagas et al., 2012).
