Armed Neutrality & The Consistent Renunciation of War
By Pascal Lottaz Aug 19, 2026 Text By Niklaus Ramseyer, Berne. (Original article here in German) Armed neutrality means consistently renouncing war as a primitive, backward instrument of foreign policy. It represents progress away from war and toward peace. For 170 years, Switzerland has had no enemies—either in the region or worldwide, and certainly no military enemies. During that time, it has neither waged a war nor had to endure one. This stands in stark contrast to every other European state.

In the following I’m linking to the so called “ecumenical framework concept” that Dr. Ulrike Guérot shared with me in a recent talk (German version here, English version coming soon). It’s a scary read, because it shows how far the war-psychosis has already gone in Germany. Summary by AI, full paper (in German) here. Dated September 2025, the “ecumenical framework concept” is considerably more than a document of pastoral planning.
Gulf Limbo: Between War and a Hard Place
Pascal Lottaz | Neutrality Studies – TRANSCEND Media Service How the US ‘Allies’ in West Asia managed to maneuver themselves into the worst of both worlds. 3 Apr 2026 – On 28 February 2026, the United States and Israel jointly launched an illegal military campaign against Iran. Within hours, Iranian drones and missiles struck Manama, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, and installations across Kuwait and Qatar—although the Gulf monarchies had not declared war on Iran.

Trump’s Board of Peace: Not an Anti-UN
Pascal Lottaz - TRANSCEND Media Service Never have I seen the blueprints of an International Organisation so reminiscent of a feudal kingdom. 20 Jan 2026 – If it weren’t so tragically linked to one of the worst genocides in my lifetime, it would almost be funny what Trump is doing with his “Board of Peace.” Last week, he seemed to have finished the envisioned charter and sent it out over the weekend to dozens of governments around the world; he even invited Vladimir Putin to join the board.

Neither the US and Its Allies nor any Other State Has a Right to Intervene in the Domestic Affairs of Other Nations
Jan Oberg, Pascal Lottaz and Annette Schiffman | Transnational Foundation – TRANSCEND Media Service With a focus on possible war on Iran, we argue that the US must – and can – be stopped. It doesn’t have a God-given exceptionalist status. It has become “too arrogant.” 15 Jan 2026 – Last week it was Venezuela – this week the United States under Trump are threatening Iran with intervening and repeating that he must have Greenland. We cannot let that happen again and again.
Amb. Chas Freeman: Attack on Venezuela Will Destroy the US Empire
Pascal Lottaz | Neutrality Studies – TRANSCEND Media Service 5 Jan 2026 Can a superpower simply kidnap a foreign leader and charge them with possessing weapons on their own soil? Now that the U.S. has effectively “caught the car” in Venezuela, is there any road left for international law, or have we fully entered the era of the outlaw state? To make sense of this unprecedented aggression, I brought back Ambassador Chas Freeman.

What Goes Around: The EU's Extralegal Sanctions Regime
It has come as a shock to many of us in the alternative media sphere when, on December 15, the EU put the esteemed analyst, political commentator, and former Swiss Army colonel Jacques Baud, on its Russia-Sanctions list. He was one of several newly sanctioned individuals (alongside, for instance, the popular French journalist, Xavier Moreau). Baud is already the second Swiss to be sanctioned.
Transcript: Putin-Trump Press Conference
By Pascal Lottaz Aug 16, 2025 The following is the press statements that both leaders gave in Anchorage, Alaska, on August 15, 2025 after their closed-door summit meeting. Western media—in its solipsistic propaganda fashion—focuses almost exclusively on the words of Donald Trump when reporting on the historical meeting in Alaska between the US and Russian presidents. All the more important it is to get a sense of how Vladimir Putin approached the press conference.
Russia and the Armenia-Azerbaijan Peace Agreement
In Washington and Brussels—especially in the mainstream media bubbles—the mood is triumphant. In the last seventy-two hours, analysts and policymakers have rushed to declare a “new era” in the South Caucasus. The ink is barely dry on the U.S.-brokered peace deal between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and yet it is being heralded in Washington as a diplomatic breakthrough. This is probably a misreading of the region’s realities — and of Russia’s enduring role within them.
The Necessity of Imagining Peace: In the Face of Tensions in the Taiwan Strait, Taiwan Needs New Space for Discourse.
Imagining de-escalation The situation in and around Taiwan is becoming more dangerous not only because of the concrete military actions of one or the other party—like more and more US military personnel are being sent to Taiwan or China's military exercises around Taiwan—but because on all sides opinions are hardening that a war cannot be averted.

Dr. Pascal Lottaz of Neutrality Studies and I discussed the escalating Israel-Iran war. Israel’s June 13, 2025, strike on Iran, framed as a “preemptive” action, raises serious legal and ethical concerns. Under international law, particularly the UN Charter, only acts of self-defense in response to an actual or imminent attack are lawful.

The West Forgot How to Make Peace. "How Peace Got Rebranded as War" - Global Research
The idea of peace used to mean something in the European Union. Even though good research by Peo Hansen shows that the early days of the European project were tainted by colonial aspirations of its first members, at least internally—for the continent—peace was a real aspiration. Not anymore. Today, “peace” is a slogan, a decoration for war conferences, or worse—an excuse for more weapons.
The Lies That Killed Ukraine
In a recent conversation on Neutrality Studies, the British historian and Stalin biographer Dr. Geoffrey Roberts systematically unpacks how historical distortions and the abysmal moral degeneration of Western leaders added up to escalate a relatively simple political crisis in Easter Europe into one of the bloodiest wars of the young 21st century (and no, it’s not the only one).
US-Russia Peace Talks Stall: Is the US Abandoning Failed Proxy War on Russia as It Preps to Attack Iran? | Dr. Pascal Lottaz
World Affairs in Context is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. Although President Donald Trump campaigned on ending the Ukraine-Russia conflict “in 24 hours”, the complexity of the US proxy war has proven to be far more nuanced. Since January 2025, the neocons in Washington spent $1 billion to bomb Yemen as the Trump Administration approved nearly $12 billion in major FMS sales to Israel.
USA Ending Its Own Hegemony - Tariffs are Huge Gift To China And BRICS | Dr. Warwick Powell
By Pascal Lottaz / Neutrality Studies Donald Trump has slapped massive tariffs on almost all countries that have trade with the USA and the Stockmarket has fallen into an abyss over the past 2 days. What the heck is this about and is the US digging its own grave or is this a brilliant Trumpian Masterplan? To discuss this I’m talking today with my colleague and friend, Dr. Warwick Powell who is an Adjunct Professor at Queensland University of Technology and a Senior Fellow at the Taihe Institute.

Ukraine's Internal Crisis
Despite the ongoing US-Russian negotiations for a ceasefire in Ukraine and Washington’s tightening of the leash of its Eastern European proxy government, there is a real danger that the Ukrainian sate with its many factions has reached a point of no-return. The risk of internal instability looms large, with the country’s ultra-right nationalist factions (which have gained significant influence since 2014) posing the most serious threat to a ceasefire attempt.

“The first CIA effort at regime change in Syria was in 1947 at the very moment of its inception. And there were multiple efforts to overthrow governments in Syria and well before Bashar Al Assad took power. … They all failed. There were efforts of course to change the Bashar Al Assad regime, to overthrow it.
The Neutralities of Austria and Switzerland: Akin but Not Alike
This is an excerpt from Neutrality After 1989: New Paths in the Post-Cold War World, edited by Naman Karl-Thomas Habtom. You can download the book free of charge from E-International Relations. Switzerland and Austria are connected not only by a border in the Alps but also by a long-standing and surprisingly intertwined commitment to neutrality. At the Congress of Vienna (1814–1815), the Austrian Empire was one of eight Great Powers giving guarantees for Switzerland’s ‘perpetual neutrality’.

Dual Neutralization as a Pathway to a Denuclearized Korea
The Debate | Opinion “Finlandization” for the North and “Austriazation” for the South provide a path toward unification – and denucleariation. On July 27, the Korean Armistice Agreement that ended the bloodshed on the Korean Peninsula turned 70 years old. While the agreement did not bring a comprehensive peace – technically the two sides are still at war – it stopped the dying and laid the foundation for the separate development of two Koreas, locked in a state of constant mutual threat.

In Defense of Neutrals
The demise of neutrality has been much exaggerated. Finnish membership and Sweden’s accession application to NATO have been interpreted in some corners as evidence of its decline. In wars of aggression, refusing to pick sides is untenable, some hold, as they berate those who still do not send weapons to Ukraine or sanction Russia. Yet whether critics like it or not, neutrality isn’t going anywhere. Principled stances of neutrality, always and everywhere, are reactions to conflict.
