The Gall of the Preservationist Crowd Knows No (Visual) Limits
Olana Netniks, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons My wife and I recently took a four day road trip to the Hudson, New York area to see some gardens and a couple preserved homes. We stayed the first night in quaint Hudson, NY, which lost to Albany by one vote to become New York’s capital. At one time it was a bustling whaling center, if you can believe it. It’s true. We actually stayed in the Whaler Hotel and many shops and restaurants have the word “whaler” in their title.
The Sure Way to Destroy a Prosperous Nation
This is not a frivolous claim, but the sure way to destroy a prosperous nation is to debase the currency. History is full of examples—from ancient Rome to the nascent French Republic to Weimar Germany. The US and the West, fiat currency regimes all, are irrevocably destined to join this sorry club. Sound Money Begets Spending Discipline The siren song of unlimited money is manna from Heaven for politicians who chafe at the limits on spending required for a sound money (precious metals) standard.
Back in the USSR: Spending Two Weeks in a Real Socialist Country
So-called “Democratic Socialists” are winning elections in America (New York City and Colorado). I’m sure that no one who either is running on a socialist platform or who voted for a socialist candidate has ever visited a real socialist country. One of the reasons is that there are not that many left. I can think only of Cuba and North Korea. Older voters may have been to some of the nations in Eastern Europe before the Iron Curtain fell around thirty-five years ago.
