Patrick Carlson: Fort Collins is working to predict and prevent domestic violence homicide before it happens (guest opinion)
Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... In a June 23 interview on Oprah’s podcast, author Rachel Louise Snyder — whose bestselling book “No Visible Bruises” reshaped how Americans understand domestic violence — argued that the term itself falls short. What we’re really talking about, she said, is intimate terrorism. The conversation highlighted the risk factors for homicide and reminded listeners that one of the most dangerous places for many women is inside the home.

Advisor Perspectives welcomes guest contributions. The views presented here do not necessarily represent those of Advisor Perspectives. Herrera Beutler shows fiscal irresponsibility with mailers
After receiving the latest round of taxpayer-funded mailers from Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler, I asked for the total cost and for the second time in two years was completely ignored. I do know that in 2012 The Columbian did a story on this issue and found that our Congresswoman’s bill for mailers came to $190,000 with one on Medicare at $37,000. When asked about it at the time, she said that she would probably keep doing it.
Do You Take Enough Time Off?
Growing and maintaining a successful practice takes constant vigilance. Many advisors feel that they can never afford to take a day off. This is the wrong attitude, as there's little point in taking care of your business if you aren't also properly taking care of yourself. In this episode, Craig and Patrick discuss whether planners take enough time off and when the best time it is to do so. Browse more episodes in this podcast series ...
Is the New Tax Law a Death Knell or Jobs Act for Estate Planners?
Many observers harbor the belief that the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will toll the death knell for estate planning as we know it. It's easy to see where they're coming from, since the tax act effectively eliminates the estate tax, largely eliminating the need for many Americans to plan for it. However, is that really such a sweeping change?
Funding Trusts 101
A lot of planners make the promise of trust-based estate planning- faster administration, lower costs, etc. That only works though, when the trust is fully funded. How to Deal With Client Complaints
Not all client interactions can be happy ones, but that doesn't mean the relationship has to suffer. Listening and deciphering what they're actually upset about is a key skill for planners. In this episode, Craig Hersch and Patrick Carlson discuss what planners can do when their clients complain. Wealth Planner Misconceptions About Advertising
Today's ever-changing legal marketplace can seem daunting to those in the estate planning realm. How does one distinguish oneself from the competition? How do you get A+ clients through the door? How do you hire a new team member that's sure to be the right fit? These topics and many more face estate planning attorneys on the rise on a daily basis. Nevertheless, solutions exist. Advertising is a sticky subject for all attorneys.
Kickstarting Your Client Base
Estate planners face unique challenges when looking for prospective clients in that not only must they tackle all of the new client obstacles that other advisors do, but they must also reckon with issues of motivation. There's no escaping the fact that estate planners force clients to deal with death and family issues head on, and those scary realities can create uncomfortable situations and doubt in even the steeliest individuals.
The Biggest Challenges for Small Estate Planners
Most lawyers didn’t go to law school to learn how to run a business. Yet, that’s exactly what solo practitioners are doing. Today’s small and solo estate planning practices face the challenges of commoditization, automated online document preparation and how to distinguish themselves in an increasingly competitive marketplace. Practice development experts Craig R. Hersch and Patrick Carlson provide valuable insight into these issues and the mindsets necessary to overcome them.
Five Smart Ways to Market Your Estate Planning Services
Estate-planning services are essential, but the field can be crowded. Effectively marketing your services can separate your offering from other estate-planning attorneys and make the difference in growing your practice and revenue. Unfortunately, many attorneys don’t know where to start; even fewer know how to execute. Taking a few simple steps can make a significant positive impact on your practice.
Why Flexibility is Key for Estate Planning Attorneys
Flexibility is key to your success as an estate-planning attorney. Estate planning is in a constant state of flux. That’s especially true today as President Donald Trump’s administration plans to alter the American tax code. When the Trump administration releases its plans, the uproar from both sides of the aisle tends to overshadow the substance of the proposals. Such was the case with Trump’s tax plan.
Five Myths to Overcome with New Estate-Planning Clients
The American public largely misunderstands estate planning. They read stories in the press about multimillion-dollar estate battles and assume estate planning is reserved for the rich and famous. Take for example the estate of the late musician Prince. The artist died with no known will, leaving the fate of his $100 million fortune up in the air. Anyone reading that story would be excused for assuming estate planning simply doesn’t apply to them.

DINKs Need Estate Planning Too
The nuclear family has traditionally been defined as two parents, two-and-a-half children and a house with a white picket fence. It’s been the basis for the American image of “family” since the 1950s. But, the times, as they say, are a changin’. The American family now comes in every shape, size, and color. DINKs One demographic that can’t be ignored is the voluntarily childless market, also known as dual income, no kids (DINKs).
Why Attorneys Need to Discuss Estate Planning with All Clients
Attorneys know that estate planning can help people across the wealth spectrum make some of the most important decisions in life. Parents can name a guardian for their children; people can convey their choices for end-of-life healthcare and establish charitable initiatives; homeowners can transfer their homes to designated heirs; and business owners can keep their business in family hands as one generation gives way to the next.
The Must-Have Legal Technology To Start a Law Firm in 2016
Will you be starting a law practice this year? Wondering what legal technology platforms you should invest in for optimizing your practice? I’ve been in your shoes. I started a practice with my partner a few years ago, after graduating from law school in 2009.
