Georgia Lawmakers Should Protect Their Constituents From Local Plastic Prohibitions And Taxes

Nearly a dozen years after local officials in Athens, Georgia sought to impose a countywide prohibition of plastic shopping bags and styrofoam containers, members of the Clarke County Commission recently put the proposal back on the table. The Commission’s Legislative Review Committee discussed the revived proposal to ban plastic bags and foam containers at their September 3 meeting and county commissioners are looking to move forward with the proposal at their next meeting on October 1.

Last fall, ATR pointed out how the tax hike-laden budget that Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) signed into law earlier in the year was on shaky ground. That’s because the state budget assumes revenue from a state digital advertising tax, the nation’s first, which stood a good chance of being struck down in court. That’s precisely what ended up happening last week, when the Maryland Tax Court issued a decision overturning that tax.
