The year 2018 was coined the “Year of the Woman” in politics after an unprecedented number of women ran for – and won – seats in Congress. In the November 2018 elections, a staggering 255 female candidates ran for office, with more than 100 of them claiming victory. It brought about comparisons to 1992, the previous “Year of the Woman.” But even before the 2018 midterms, Laura Colarusso, the digital managing editor at WGBH News, was looking at how women were represented in public office.
