Marco.
A Stellar magnesium to silicon ratio in the atmosphere of an exoplanet - Nature Communications
|
Abstract The elemental compositions of exoplanets encode information about their formation environments and internal structures. While volatile ratios such as carbon-to-oxygen (C/O) are used to trace formation location, the rock-forming elements–magnesium (Mg), silicon (Si), and iron (Fe)–govern interior mineralogy and are commonly assumed to reflect the host star’s abundances. Yet this assumption remains largely untested.

Examining the Cuomo record: He protected us during COVID and should be mayor
This spring New York City marks five somber years since its first confirmed COVID-19 case, a cruel virus that disproportionately impacted Black and Brown communities. Every day since, we keep praying for the victims and their families, and I encourage my congregants to find solace in faith that from those darkest depths, we emerged. Yet as families continue to grieve, and I do my best to guide them through the healing of prayer, it pains me to see the pandemic still being politicized.

The Peoples Filibuster — ShutDownDC
GET EXCITED! ShutDownDC and friends are tired of Republicans filibustering the progressive agenda (and people like Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema letting them). So, after a lot of brainstorming and talking to partners, we decided to hold our own filibuster FOR OUR agenda. Here’s how we’re gonna do it: Set up right down the block from Mitch McConnell's place (with plenty of visits to his house) Filibuster for 25 hours from Nov.
Healthcare needs to shed its traditional approach. Here's why | Opinion Original
Robert C. Garrett and Patrick Young For decades, the U.S. healthcare system has focused primarily on healing patients and connecting with people in illness or crisis. Thankfully, there’s a new approach. Increasingly, American medicine is looking beyond the radar of traditional healthcare to address some of the biggest barriers to good health: issues including lack of housing, food insecurity, transportation and substance abuse.

Can boys and girls be friends?
As a gay man, raised by a nan and mum for much of my childhood, it is safe to say that I preferred the company of girls as friends from a young age. I was always considered weird by teachers at my primary school, but at 21 years old I have to ask myself: "Is it really that weird for boys and girls to be friends?" On the surface, there is no reason why men and women cannot be friends with the other, as we all share the possibility of having things in common with people of any gender.
Incredible women: what makes my mother inspiring?
Not to sound super sappy, and babyish but I am inspired by my mum, on a daily basis. When I think of an inspirational woman, she is the first that comes to mind. She started as a typist with barely any qualifications, and is now a successful practice manager of a law firm. How could I not be inspired by that? She has always been upfront about me trying to better myself, to leave behind my working-class upbringing, to try and give future generations, a better life-start than I had.
This Wednesday, come to the Capitol to call for expulsion — ShutDownDC
Wednesday's coup attempt at the Capitol was a travesty on a number of levels. On Friday, we joined Remove Trump to display a banner with the impeachment clause of the U.S. Constitution in front of the Capitol (photo below). Now House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has announced that the House will start impeachment proceedings against Trump tomorrow. But we're not done.
ShutDownDC Drops in on Senator Josh Hawley’s House to Encourage him to Reconsider his Attack on Democracy — ShutDownDC
This evening, around a dozen activists with ShutDownDC held an hour long vigil at the Virginia home of Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Missouri) to demand that he drop his baseless contestation of the 2020 presidential election results. Hawley was the first of 12 Republican senators who pledged to join more than 100 Republican House members in their plan to derail Congress' acceptance of Joe Biden's election win on January 6. Activists lit candles and delivered a copy of the US Constitution to Hawley's door.
ABRA: Revoke Harry's liquor license immediately — ShutDownDC
Over the weekend of December 11 – 13, Harry's Restaurant and Bar (436 11th St. NW) allowed patrons– supporters of Donald Trump who were in DC to protest the legitimate election results – to congregate in large numbers without masks in violation of the district's COVID ordinance, drawing investigation by the DC Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration. These patrons went out after getting drunk at Harry's to attack DC residents, resulting in four stabbings and numerous arrests.
Horoscopes: which Christmas character is your Zodiac sign most like?

Well, here is the official Courier edition of what winter character are you like, according to your zodiac: Aries (March 21st- April 19th)- Rudolph: Aries individuals love to be 'number one', so it makes sense that they are the most well-known of Santa's reindeer. What I want heterosexual students to understand, as an LGBT student
Written by Patrick Young• 19th November 2020• Campus Comment, Current Affairs I am here for inclusivity, and shared spaces, but if you are going to enter LGBTQ+ spaces, I have something important to discuss with you. Everyone I know enjoys visiting Newcastle’s gay bars and clubs, both my LGBTQ+ friends, and our many heterosexual allies. However, I have one issue with heterosexual people in our space.
Pyjamas on Christmas: to match, or not to match?
As an adult, I love getting new pyjamas. Even more than that, I love wearing pyjamas whenever I am not doing much… which is very often. Christmas is the perfect time to lounge around in pyjamas, and relax. I’m no fashionista, my favourite pyjamas are mismatched and pretty worn – though I doubt I’m alone there. Some people may argue that Christmas is a special occasion, and that, even if I am in pyjamas, I should still put some effort into looking respectable for the holiday.
A giant problem with sustainable fashion
Like many of today’s young adults, I am conscious about what I wear, and where it comes from. However, I face one severe setback in this regard – I am a 6ft 10 inches male. At the best of times, I find it hard to find clothes that fit me, but when it comes to sustainable fashion, people like me are forgotten. I know it is because I am outside the norm, in terms of height, and thus, unlikely to be thought of when fashion brands are developing clothing for the masses.

Shadowlands Postponed: What this could mean for the World of Warcraft community
In a shocking move from Activision Blizzard, the release of the eighth expansion of World of Warcraft – Shadowlands has been postponed. Despite the lack of a release date, many fans are welcoming this delay. Activision Blizzard (or simply Blizzard) have been known to rush expansions in the past. With the fifth expansion, Warlords of Draenor being frequently targeted as one which was released too soon according to many fans of this popular MMORPG, with questing feeling unfinished and lacklustre.

Gendered language: from she’s bossy to she’s a boss!
Written by Patrick Young• 17th March 2020• Comment Gendered language is often detrimental to a nuanced view of whole communities of people. Why, then, have people struggled to give up language that creates a pejorative idea of women? Why can men be commanding, but women can only be bossy? This ultimately stems from misogyny, or the idea that the notion that a woman can be powerful, and commanding, usually implies that they have dominated over their male counterparts. This is not the case.
How I dated someone for eight months before meeting them
In our technological era, it is easier than ever to find someone to love, as the constraints of the past have been removed due to the invention of the internet. Many people now look to dating apps to find love, and for a few people like myself, we look past the borders of our own countries to find love. I met my boyfriend on a dating app, much the same as any other couple, yet he lives in Vermont, and I live here, in Newcastle.
Lisa Nandy: Screamer of trans rights, or clever politician?
Written by Patrick Young• 5th March 2020• Comment Many labour party members have criticised the labour leadership candidate over her response to a pledge card asking her whether she’d agree to expelling leader members who belong to anti-trans groups, such as Woman’s Place UK. However, her response was arguably only polarising because she said that she had to take time to think it over before she signed the pledge, due to how the card was phrased.

WARNING: There may be some light roasting (sorry Scorpios!)… Capricorn – by Jenny Kinnersley Capricorns are known as the hardest working sign in the zodiac, but they still need time to unwind on holiday. While they won’t want anything too adventurous from their holiday, they are not the type to sit around lounging on the beach all day.
The real problem with celebrities coming out
Written by Patrick Young• 20th February 2020• Comment Many people have made their own responses to Jameela Jamil and Philip Schofield’s coming out. Yet they seem to be missing the big picture- It absolutely nobody’s business but their own. First, Philip’s coming out took a lot of guts, coming out at any age is hard, but coming out later in life is a challenge I will luckily never have to go through.
Warcraft III: Reforged met with unfavourable review scores
The long-awaited re-release of Warcraft III has left many fans of the franchise disheartened. Warcraft III: Reforged was released on 29 January 2020, after the release was pushed back from 31 December 2019. As such, many fans, myself included, believed that this meant Blizzard would ensure that this game would be worthy of the legacy of the original Warcraft III. Customers have complained that the game is clearly unfinished.
Brexit is over- it’s time to move on and focus on what’s important
Written by Patrick Young• 12th February 2020• Comment, Uncategorised Brexit has finally been done. Boris’ entire election campaign was done-and-dusted in just over a month, so now what? I was not a fan of the idea of Brexit, but, in the wake of it finally being finished after four years, it is about time, that we, as a nation came together, to focus on more pressing issues facing us, and the rest of the world.
The Coronavirus: More than just a disease
Written by Patrick Young• 11th February 2020• Comment, Uncategorised Late 2019 saw an outbreak of Coronavirus in China; the disease spreading globally shortly after and following through into the first few months of the new decade. This disease, however, has highlighted not only gaps in our disease prevention systems but has also shone a light on apparent systemic racism and prejudice prevalent in the UK.

Trump’s “peace” plan
Written by Patrick Young• 3rd February 2020• Comment Trump’s plan for “peace” in the Middle East is, for lack of a better word, dumb. He is all for the Israeli takeover of Palestinian land, despite Palestine having an older claim to the land than Israel. He has also doubled down on his idiotic notion that Jerusalem belongs to Israel alone, even though it is the holy city for all three of the biggest Abrahamic religions.
Why the Warren-Sanders dispute could not come at a worse time for Democrats
Written by Patrick Young• 3rd February 2020• Comment The recent dispute between Democratic presidential nominees, Senators Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), has caused a schism within the party. The split may see the Democrats defeated in the upcoming election, and pave the way for more of the same from Donald Trump and his Republican cabal.

10 year forecast: Climate
Written by Patrick Young• 4th December 2019• Comment As this decade ends, I want to look forward to a brighter tomorrow. I cannot do that. The future is full of uncertainty when it comes to the environment. Our climate is spinning out of our control and we are heading towards an unchangeable mass extinction event; one that we have only ourselves to blame for.
Christmas across the world: Vermont, USA
This mountainous winter wonderland is nestled away on America’s north-eastern border with Canada. I do not understand how many tourists gloss over this hidden gem, in favour of the hustle and bustle of Canada during the holidays. Any Vermonter will tell you, that Flatlanders (their term for us outsiders) come to Vermont for two things only- Skiing and the snow. Many Vermonters enjoy a nice Christmas Ham, as opposed to our Turkey.
Horror in Hong Kong: Why we should do more to help protesters
Written by Patrick Young• 25th November 2019• Comment Protests have ravaged Hong Kong for five months, yet the government has refused to listen to the demands of the protesters, its own citizens. Instead they are being paid out by China’s central government. The “One country, two systems” policy of the central Chinese government essentially strips Hong Kong citizens of their autonomy. Therefore, it shouldn’t be hard to see why so many citizens have an appetite for a more democratic society.
How have social media poets revolutionised the art form?
Written by Patrick Young• 25th November 2019• Arts, Poetry Some modern poets have decided to make a radical change to how their poetry is presented- they post spoken word pieces on social media, as well as publishing their poetry collections. This is an ingenious new way of marketing to a contemporary audience and more and more poets are resorting to this revolutionary new mode of publication.
Review: Pokémon Sword and Shield
The event many Pokémon fans have been eagerly awaiting has finally arrived on our screens. I must admit that the backlash that Game Freak and The Pokémon Company have faced seems massively unwarranted. Visually, the game is stunning; it’s very sleek, with vibrant colours akin to Breath of the Wild, and it all transfers between the portable screen and the TV remarkably well.
Why you should vote for… Labour
On 12 December, I shall be voting for the Labour party. This is because I agree with many of Labour’s policies, especially with regards to climate change and education. Frankly, I couldn’t care less about Brexit: it is tedious at this point, so it really is not influencing my opinion on the election in any way.
Tasteless tactics: was Trump right to pick his own golf retreat to host G7 summit?
Written by Patrick Young• 29th October 2019• Comment Trump, as we all know, is a man of… questionable decisions. From his controversial trans military ban, to his ridiculous plan to build a wall. So why are we all still surprised when he does something highly unethical? His latest controversy is his decision put forward his own resort to host the G7 summit. This, unsurprisingly, serves his own interest.

Uber: A small step towards world bankruptcy
Taxi alternative Uber generates enormous controversy. Politicians ought to be looking to the future, not safeguarding an increasingly irrelevant status quo. Indeed their very future power depends on it. The future brings bad news for taxi drivers, no relief for the ‘Uber’ classes and a further clear demonstration, as if one were needed, that the political classes are seamlessly out of step with the future of everything.
