Interview
Have you ever used a typewriter?
IBM Correcting Selectric II. You could type AND correct, no white-out or starting over.
How is social media changing news?
Not so much SM, but click-bait is breaking critical thinking & reading habits. Clever headlines are meaningless without great content.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Journalists are the last remaining BS filters on earth. Just because someone pays you, doesn't make what they feel automatically true.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Quick message, with a couple of sentences that get to the heart of the piece. And I like to be challenging, backed by data,
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
AWS, Azure, @Code, GitHub, Python, Go, .Net, SolarWinds, and lots more.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter. The geek force is strong with it.
Why did you become a journalist?
I've been helping enterprise tech pros sort out complexity and vendor hype for nearly twenty years. These days I'm giving back.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
A piece on the host mess of 5G in the US. The blowback was considerable, but nothing about its accuracy.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Working on microcontroller projects, flying or in my workshop.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
IT cost & complexity is largely the result of never ending new tech adoption. Shiny does not automatically equal good.
