Sun Valley is world-famous for its beautiful scenery, great skiing and A-list celebrity residents. But for many locals, the real stars are the wild animals that wander the hills, stroll through neighborhoods, and sometimes visit backyards in search of a snack. Lions, moose and bears, oh my! Locals feel a strong sense of responsibility and want to protect, observe and enjoy this special relationship.

During Idaho’s chilliest months, there is no better antidote to cabin fever than a good old-fashioned winter carnival. Across the state, numerous winter festivals, each with its own unique theme, transform the snowy landscape into a vibrant jamboree of community, creativity, and cheer. Some of these celebrations date back decades and were created to combat the winter blues and boost business and tourism in these small Idaho towns.

The horse explodes into the arena at top speed, kicking up dirt as it races toward the first of three barrels placed in a triangular pattern in the center of the arena. As it blasts toward the first barrel, the rider needs to know when to slow down just enough to make a tight, hairpin circle around the barrel without knocking it down. The team then gears up to a full gallop to perform the same gutsy moves around the next two barrels.
