Paul Bissonnette: Why I'm rooting for the Blues in the Stanley Cup Playoffs
When I signed a professional try-out (PTO) contract with the St. Louis Blues for the 2014 training camp, I understood I was there to be cut after a couple of weeks. But after 24 hours, I wanted the Blues to adopt me. NHL veteran Ryan Whitney was also there on a PTO. We would sit in the dressing room and look at each other like we had just discovered wonderland. “When we get cut, do you think we could just hang out here all season?” I asked Whitney.

On Wednesday night in Havana, Cuba, a tall guy in a t-shirt and basketball shorts started playing catch on the lawn outside the historic Hotel Nacional. The man lazily slow-tossed the ball to his friend as the sun set on the harbor below the famous el Malecón. But then he kept moving further and further back down the lawn, throwing perfect darts from 60, 70, 80 feet away.

My father used to beat the shit out of me. I don’t say that to be shocking, or to get your attention. I say that because it’s just a simple fact. He would throw punches. Not like he was hitting a small child — but like he was in a bar fight with a grown man. Whenever some people hear the phrase “child abuse,â€? it’s very hard for them to think about what’s really happening. They imagine discipline that gets out of hand once in a while, because it’s easier that way.
The Right Way | By Shane Doan
Oh no… what did I do? That was my first thought as Dave Manson slammed my 19-year-old body into the glass with his forearm. Now mind you, we were on the same team. This was at a practice in ’95 when the franchise was still in Winnipeg. I had just disrespected Terry Simpson, our head coach. I had screwed up during some drill, so Terry starting chewing me out in front of the team. Once he was done, I kind of rolled my eyes at him as I skated away. Like a 19-year-old punk might be prone to do.

It was loud. No, hang on, let me really explain that. There’s two types of loud that I’ve experienced in a ballpark. There’s the one level of loud where you get goosebumps and you’re like, Oh man, these fans are fired up. This is awesome. And then there’s a whole different level of loud where the noise becomes like a wall of sound and it takes on a life of its own and you can’t even hear yourself think. I had never experienced this peak level of loud until the 2013 NL Wild Card Game at PNC Park.

This wasn’t one of those bottom-of-the-ninth, two outs, bases loaded, Game 7 moments we all dreamed about when we were kids. It was much less glamorous than that. In fact, it was a fairly meaningless late September at-bat of my career. But it’s one I’ll remember forever. It was the bottom of the eighth inning in the last game of the 1998 season. The Reds weren’t going to the playoffs, so we were six outs away from going home for the winter.
