Pausing the Menopause
It was four of five years ago now But his words… still ring…sting and burn my ears. Announcing the dawn of a new day….a newly dying day. ‘Drop dead you old bag!’ he spat venomously. In 1971, I was a student naturalist in Turkey Point Provincial Park. One holiday Saturday morning, a family arrived at the park office, which also served as the campground office, at about 10 o’clock. The father came into the office looking tired and haggard. He asked if we had a campsite available. When we said yes, he erupted in joy. He told us that he and his family had left Toronto after the children finished school on Friday evening, the day before.

It is now well-recognized that outdoor recreation activities are very positive for our health; physical, social, and psychological. There is a global effort entitled Healthy People; Healthy Parks, of which Ontario Parks is a supporter. Ontario Provincial Parks provide the single largest source of camping in Canada. The 100 operating parks contain 19,253 developed campsites as of 2019. There are another 8,000 backcountry campsites, largely accessible by canoe only.
