A LANDMARK sweet chestnut tree in a Frome park which died over the winter has been reinvented - as a sculpture and a game for visitors. The tree, in Victoria Park, has been given a new lease of 'life' thanks to the efforts of woodcarver Graham Derham. Rather than remove the dead tree, Frome Town Council commissioned Mr Derham to create a sculpture, and his skills have seen the trunk transformed into not only a piece of art - but a fun game for park visitors with a ping-pong ball.

A SOMERSET pub landlord who stepped up to help others during a county tragedy has been given an honour in a special ceremony. Eric Norman was hailed a "community hero" after opening the Rest and Be Thankful pub, in Wheddon Cross, after a tragic coach crash nearby, which claimed the life of 10-year-old Oliver Price, in July last year.

A SOMERSET village near Bristol Airport will be the latest to see transport changes as part of a district-wide scheme - with work getting underway on Monday (September 14). A series of improvements, including new bus shelters and real-time passenger information, will be installed in Cleeve as part of a government-funded rollout of improvements being overseen by North Somerset Council (NSC).

Trainee reporter in Stroud, Gloucestershire. Unless you count founding editor of the school paper.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, but not often, as I get frustrated not being able to type as quickly as I like!

How is social media changing news?

It's both the best and worst thing to ever happen. Increasing access/sources, reducing reliability/accuracy.

2021 - Special Supplement of the Year

Entries for the Special Supplement of the Year Award were judged on "outstanding content, design, use of photography and readability for a special supplement produced as a one-off to mark a special event or achievement, either with the newspaper or clearly linked to a local or regional paper". My entry - Glastonbury 50 - was a special created to mark 50 years of the Glastonbury Festival. I designed, commissioned and wrote it. It went on to sell more hundreds of copies of the newspaper, which were sent around the world, to fans of the event - Somerset's largest - and led to me writing a book about the festival.
