Paul Vachon is a Detroit-based freelance writer, public speaker, and author. He writes for trade and consumer magazines.

He’s also written six books on Detroit history, and regularly revises guidebooks on Michigan travel.

In his spare time, Paul enjoys traveling, nature photography, and acting in community theatre. He also thinks having a map of the state on the back of his left hand is pretty cool.

What was your first job as a journalist?

I've always been a freelancer.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, when I was in college.

How is social media changing news?

On the positive side, it can be invaluable in promoting newly written stories. On the negative end, it often helps spread misinformation.

2009 - Magazine Feature

My article "Detroit's Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument" appeared in the Fall 2009 issue of The Chronicle, published by the Historical Society of Michigan. The article tells the story behind a monument in downtown Detroit honoring Michiganians who served in the Civil War.
