What was your first job as a journalist?
I started as a freelance contributor and somehow turned that into a career writing about games. These days, I also run The Nerdy Type, my own independent publication focused on indie games.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes, and I'd write everything on a typewriter if Ctrl+Z was a viable option.
How is social media changing news?
Social media has blurred the line between where news happens, where it's reported, and where people discuss it.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
I'm stretching the definition of journalist here, but Odette from Dungeon Crawler Carl. She's an interviewer, media personality, and a spectacular example of why journalistic ethics are probably quite important.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
#NotMyMoogle - Referring to the Moogle design in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. It looked like a cursed Koala, and it's still unnerving.
Why did you become a journalist?
Because I love writing and I love games. Getting to spend my time finding interesting things and then telling other people why they should care about them is pretty much my ideal job.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Keep writing, develop your own voice, and learn SEO; you'll need it. But don't let SEO dictate everything you write.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Any time. I read pitches when I can, and I'm always interested in hearing about indie games I might otherwise have missed.
What's your favorite drink?
If I was forced to be honest, I'd say anything with caffeine in it. It's terrible for me, I know, but it can't be helped.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Spending time with my family, reading, gaming, or making jewelry.
