Introduction The first gene associated with epilepsy was identified at the turn of the last century (Steinlein et al., 1995; Oyrer et al., 2018), 2400 years after Hippocrates’ stipulation that the ‘sacred disease’ had a hereditary basis (Temkin, 1933; Wolf, 2025). Among the genes identified to-date and screened in paediatric epilepsy panels (Burk et al., 2024), KCNA2 is a recent addition, the first reports being published in 2015 (Pena & Coimbra, 2015; Syrbe et al., 2015).

Results Currents were recorded from excised inside out patches of membrane from HEK cells transfected with BKα complementary DNA (cDNA). As shown in Figure 1, A–C depolarizations from −100 mV to +200 mV in 20 mV increments from a holding potential of −100 mV evoked noisy, sustained currents. These activated at more negative potentials as the [Ca2+] at the cytosolic surface of each patch was increased.
