Maybe I'm petty. Maybe I'm biased as a Liverpool fan. But every time I see another story about Trent's struggles since leaving Anfield, I find myself asking the same question: was it really worth it? Honestly, I still don't understand his decision. He had everything at Liverpool. Status. The love of the supporters. A guaranteed place in the club's history. A realistic chance of becoming one of the defining captains of his generation.

I understand the romance around having a former player, and that he was initially successful. But at thee same time, Iraola has done amazing work for much longer. So he would have been the more logical choice in my view. He also plays an acceptable style for United Fans. With Carrick I am not so sure, espcially given his assistant coach. But by going for Carrick, not only is there a higher risk, but also Iraola is now free to go to a direct rival. Which of course he just did.
