Brattleboro nixes plan to raise tax dollars for ailing hospital

The Brattleboro Select Board is backing away from its plan to raise taxpayer money to support the town’s struggling hospital. Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, which is estimated to lose more than $14 million this year, says it needs to close its birthing center to save money. The Brattleboro Select Board considered holding a townwide vote on raising a special tax, up to possibly $1 million, to support the hospital.

Vermont school district will vote on new process for closing small schools

A group of Central Vermont parents wants to change how their district votes on closing small schools. Currently, towns in the Washington Central Unified Union School District make the final call on whether they want their school to close, even if the district board recommends closure. In February, voters in Calais, Vt., and Worcester, Vt., voted against closing their schools after a long and contentious debate around declining enrollments, taxes and education policy.

Brattleboro contemplates raising tax money in bid to keep birth center open

Faced with the prospect of losing its hospital birth center, Brattleboro officials are looking for a way to raise money locally to keep the facility open. The Brattleboro Select Board is making plans to hold a town vote on whether to pass a new tax on residents that would go towards the birth center at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital. On Tuesday it unanimously voted to have the town staff draft a special town meeting warning, which the board will possibly vote on at its next meeting.
