From the opening tip, UConn men’s basketball set the tone for how Wednesday night’s contest would go. The Huskies put on a defensive clinic, and drove up the scoreboard on their arch nemesis St. John’s. It was over early, with fans from both teams trickling out of PeoplesBank Arena before the final score settled at 72-40. This was a bully ball game for center Tarris Reed, who has had some quiet moments of late before getting the ultimate revenge on Wednesday night.

It is always easy to overreact to one result, especially for those prone to recency bias. NJIT’s 81-63 loss to UAlbany on Thursday night in Newark should not set off alarms just yet. The Highlanders still control their regular-season fate, trailing UMBC by a half-game entering the final stretch. There was little to like about the second half against the Great Danes after NJIT built a 10-point halftime lead.
