Revive Live with Jack Daniels
Jack Daniel’s returns this autumn with a new run of shows in partnership with Metropolis Studios – and this year Soho Radio – to celebrate the spirit of independence, its continued support of the Music Venues Trust and a new partnership with Record Store Day, one of the country’s leading cultural calendar events.
Win one of five copies of Together We Can by Peter Baines
The inspiring story of Peter Baines who on December 1, 2024, at the age of 58, set off from the north of Thailand to run 1400km over 26 days. His goal? To raise $1 million. Once a forensic investigator with the NSW Police, he was deployed to Thailand after the Boxing Day tsunami where he met 32 children orphaned by the tsunami. Baines started a charity with the objective of building a home for these children. This home marked the finish line of his run, exactly 20 years to the day of the tsunami.
The One Question You Must Ask of Your Philosophy Of Life
And it’s not how accurate is it Have you ever realised how many people have a belief that is just plain stupid. At least one. Who here is prepared to stand up and say, “That doesn’t apply to me”. Hopefully not very many. Also hopefully the vast majority of your views are accurate. Let’s assume most of your views are accurate. Which leads to a paradox. We know that some of your views are inaccurate. But each belief on it’s own is most definitely accurate. OK, I hear you ask.
Leadership Matters: Stories and Insights for Leaders, Achievers and Visionaries
There are some similarities here with other models of leadership, notably Conscious Leadership, when Peter talks about leading with ‘the heart, the head and the hands’. And the concept that, when you are in the thick of it, trust matters at least as much as competence certainly resonated strongly with me. Being in a team, and leading a team is about the people you are with not just the skills they have. What lessons can be drawn from Peter’s stories?

Why kindness in the workplace is a strong predictor of happiness
According to recent research, it has been shown that kindness, overall happiness and job satisfaction are directly linked – yet kindness has been seen as a non-essential leadership trait. Until now. As we slowly recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health and wellbeing have become a top priority for staff and job seekers.
Is the four-day work week enough to keep employees happy?
The COVID-19 pandemic undeniably reshaped the way we work. Many employees experienced remote work for the first time and discovered its benefits. As leaders, you may have noticed a significant shift in the desire for flexibility among your employees. It is crucial to understand the impact of increased flexibility on meaningful work and consider innovative approaches like the four-day work week if you want to attract and retain talent.
Top leadership lessons gleaned from decades in disaster response
Crisis is the critical testing ground for leadership. It is where the actions and reactions of leaders are more important than the position they hold. As a member of the Forensic Services Group within the New South Wales Police, for two decades responding to major crime was my bread and butter. With the arrival of terrorism on our doorstep following the Bali bombings, things would change.
Opinion: What needs to happen to address the child sexual abuse epidemic?
The Australian child maltreatment Study released earlier this year found that 28.5% of the population of 16-65 year olds were sexually abused as a child. The vast majority of this abuse was not institutional, but if our institutions can’t be made accountable, how do we as a society tackle the epidemic of child sexual abuse in our midst?
Better manage entitled employees with this six-step guide
Some reports claim that gen Z is the most challenging generation to work with, giving rise to suggestions that they are overly entitled. However, entitlement isn’t a concept that is generationally bound. Employees with high psychological entitlement morally rationalize their behavior to explain workplace outcomes in a self-serving manner and always see themselves positively.
How CEOs can maximize their energy to boost work performance
As a CEO, energy is one of your most valuable currencies. You must be at your best each day while establishing vision and strategy, stakeholder management, brand reputation, investor relations, talent management, risk management and much more. Picture your body and mind as a cell phone battery. Each morning, you start in the green, but with every decision and action, a percentage of that battery depletes. Energy is a limited resource that needs recharging at some point.
How entrepreneurship education can unlock hidden potential
The wheels of cultural change turn slowly. Globally, we are certainly experiencing progressive shifts toward improved diversity and equity in most industries. There are more people than ever pursuing entrepreneurship. Yet statistically, successful founders are still far more likely to be young, university-educated men than any other demographic, according to a study by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor.
Attitudes toward menopause in the workplace need to change
Menopause is a natural phase of life experienced by almost every woman, bringing about profound hormonal changes. While often seen as a personal journey, menopause can significantly impact women in the workplace, including those in senior leadership positions. The physical and cognitive symptoms associated with menopause present unique challenges for these leaders. However, we can unlock these leaders’ true power and potential by understanding and addressing menopause.
Presentation mistakes to avoid if you hope to draw your audience in
In my 25-plus years leading strategy across a range of advertising and marketing roles, I have sat through thousands of sales presentations and seen great ideas fail to connect when the presenter and the idea get lost in the slides. When it comes to landing that idea, selling a solution and convincing others to take action, there are five common presenting mistakes that can derail that outcome, confuse the audience and leave them with more questions than answers. 1.
Why resilience in leadership sets the tone for achieving success
We can’t change what’s happened, but we can all change what happens next. This learning came to me at two significant points in my life. The first was when I met a group of children living in a tent in the grounds of a temple at Bang Muang, in the Takua Pa region of Thailand. Each of the kids had lost their parents and extended family as a result of the Boxing Day tsunami. They had all lost their homes and many had lost their brothers and sisters.
What my experience in disaster recovery taught me about leadership
The value of presence occurred to me while standing in a small community hall in Iwate Prefecture, Japan, in early 2011. It was the aftermath of the tsunami that devastated so much of the east coast of that beautiful country and claimed close to 20,000 lives, writes Peter Baines founder of Hands Across the Water. Once again, I found myself in a foreign country, one that I had come to love, walking through the devastation, the enormity of which I had never seen before.

Don’t let perfection be the enemy of good
If we wait until we have all of the answers to all of the possible questions there is a good chance we will miss the opportunity that is before us or one of our competitors will seize the position of dominance. Standing in the grounds of the temple Wat Yan Yao, I recall a conversation that one of Australia’s leading forensic pathologist had. Overlooking the decomposing bodies of 3500 people he commented “all we can do here is a token effort”.
Untypical: The hidden voices we need to hear in the media
Phil Hayes-Brown was appointed Wallara CEO in 2010 after a 20 year career spanning investment banking, commercial law and sports marketing. His career included 12 years with the National Basketball Association where he finished as MD NBA Asia in Hong Kong, and a year as a GM with the Hawthorn Football Club leading all the Club’s commercial operations.
Opinion: The value of shared experiences in building team unity
Dan Pallotta said “People are tired of being asked to do the least they can possibly do, people are yearning to measure the full distance of their potential for causes they care about deeply”. It is this very observation by Pallotta that has seen the charity I formed in 2005, not just survive but grow to be the biggest contributing Australian charity to Thailand.
How to find purpose that feeds your soul and why it's important
In particular, Baines reveals how the devastating aftermath of Thailand’s Boxing Day Tsunami shaped his understanding of what it means to be a true leader — and how that transformative event led him to start a multi-million-dollar charity that has helped thousands. Here, Baines draws upon his humanitarianism experience from the Thailand tsunami and looks at the importance of finding a worthy purpose in life.
