The IHRA definition of antisemitism is anti-intellectual and cannot serve as Columbia’s standard
Consider some of the examples given by the IHRA definition for what would constitute evidence of antisemitism: “Applying double standards by requiring of [Israel] a behavior not expected or demanded of any other democratic nation” and “Drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis.” By this standard, scholars conducting comparative research on genocide would be considered antisemitic if they include among their cases the present Israeli campaign in Gaza, which has...
Columbia must stand up to the Trump administration in the second round
The letter that the University submitted in response to the Trump administration’s demands fails to rise to the gravity of the authoritarian moment we are experiencing. A federal administration with evident authoritarian tendencies is trying to bring to heel all other power centers: its own political party and with it, Congress, the civil service and independent agencies, and law firms and the courts.
Interdisciplinary college curriculum and its labor market implications | Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
Significance The knowledge structure of higher education curriculum, especially its interdisciplinarity, is not well understood at the very basic level of knowledge itself. From insights arising from the sociology of knowledge on interdisciplinarity, we develop a measure of the concept based directly on the content of college courses.
Bridging the parochial divide: Outsider brokerage in mafia families
Introduction Network scholars have long seen brokerage—defined as the occupancy of “bridging” positions between people and groups in network structure—as a wellspring of social capital. By virtue of having access to multiple overlapping social circles, brokers are more likely to be exposed to novel information and to see potential opportunities that would be missed by peers entrenched within comparatively insular network arrangements (Burt 1992; Granovetter 1973).
Differential spatial-social accessibility to mental health care and suicide
Significance Against the backdrop of the current US mental health crisis, this study assembles 86 data sources to map, nationally, all psychiatrists and psychotherapists. Computationally modeling the relationship between access to mental health care providers and suicide, we find that improved spatial-social accessibility to psychiatrists and, to a lesser extent, to psychotherapists, is associated with reduced risk—even after controlling for a wide host of factors predictive of suicide.

Important Matters in Political Context
The 2004 General Social Survey (GSS) reported significant increases in social isolation and significant decreases in ego network size relative to previous periods. These results have been repeatedly challenged. Critics have argued that malfeasant interviewers, coding errors, or training effects lie behind these results. While each critique has some merit, none precisely identify the cause of decreased ego network size.

Doormen
Little fascinates New Yorkers more than doormen, who know far more about tenants than tenants know about them. Doormen know what their tenants eat, what kind of movies they watch, whom they spend time with, whether they drink too much, and whether they have kinky sex. But if doormen are unusually familiar with their tenants, they are also socially very distant.
