More than five months after a series of violent storms battered Northland's east coast, some evacuees still can not go home - because they no longer have homes to go to. The displaced include Aroha Samuels and Willy Thompson, who first knew how bad the storm was when they woke up on 18 January in knee-deep water. "Around quarter to five that morning, Willy got up and he wondered why there was water up to his knees inside the caravan," Samuels said. "We had to sit there, we couldn't get out.

A Northland woman has turned her loathing of a toxic weed into environmental success - and a competition result even entire teams of weed-busters couldn't match. Aroha Chase pulled up 11,168 moth plant vines in less than three months, most of them near her home in Pakaraka, in rural mid-Northland. On one occasion she found and pulled out 736 vines in a single day. She also collected 295 moth plant pods, each of which contains hundreds of seeds.

Critically ill Marsden Point worker was at bottom of 20-metre deep tank Original

A worker who sparked an emergency rescue after becoming seriously ill at the former Marsden Point oil refinery was at the bottom of a tank up to 20 metres deep at the time. A Northern Rescue spokesman said the worker suffered a "serious medical event" around 3.30pm on Thursday at the former refinery, now Channel Infrastructure, at the entrance to Whangārei Harbour. A helicopter was dispatched to the scene with plans of winching the man out of the large, empty fuel storage tank.
