Gov. Phil Scott’s approval rating has hit a four-year low, according to a University of New Hampshire poll released this week. Two Democratic challengers to the Republican incumbent say that indicates Vermonters want a new leader in the state’s highest office. While 51% of Vermonters still approve of the job Scott is doing as governor, his rating has slipped 10 points since the last UNH survey in January.

SNAP enrollment is down in Vermont. Advocates blame new work requirements

Nearly 5,000 fewer Vermonters are receiving federal food assistance benefits after Congress imposed new work requirements for the program. And Vermont is about to spend $3.5 million to try to reverse what advocates say is the largest enrollment decline in decades. Participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program has dropped 7% since passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act last summer, according to state data.

Phil Scott signed legislation that requires school districts to consider merging into larger governance units. Lawmakers this year abandoned efforts to force school districts to merge after the proposal drew opposition across the state.
