The Dark Wizard (2026– )

Cuphophyllus lijiangensis sp. nov. (Hygrophoraceae, Agaricales) from Yunnan, China
ABSTRACT A new species of Cuphophyllus (Hygrophoraceae, Agaricales) was discovered in mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forests (Pinaceae and Fagaceae) and grassland margins in Lijiang, North-west Yunnan, and South-west China. The species is described using morphological and molecular methods. Based on on-site habitat observation data and a literature review, the novel species is best described as a saprobic macrofungus that thrives in soil humus within mixed pine forests or grasslands.
Lasagna at Live Theatre, Newcastle
Catrina McHugh Open Clasp Live Theatre, Newcastle 5–11 March 2023 Listing details and ticket info... Share: Open Clasp’s stated aim is to save the world one play at a time, and you could do a lot worse than that. For the last quarter century, the company has looked to transform women’s lives, and for this current production they’ve worked with Pause, the charity involved with women who’ve had children taken into care.
One Off at Live Theatre, Newcastle
Ric Renton Live Theatre, Paines Plough and Synergy Theatre Project Live Theatre, Newcastle 10–26 November 2022 Listing details and ticket info... Share: Prison drama has a long history. If we take two TV extremes, there’s the three highly successful 1970s series of Porridge, written by Clements & Le Frenais and starring Ronnie Barker and Richard Beckinsale. This was quality stuff, if soft-centered.
The Invention of Baron Avro Manhattan
Tom Kelly Laurels Theatre Laurels Whitley Bay 6–8 October 2022 Listing details and ticket info... Share: Given the title of Tom Kelly’s new play and the larger than life portrayal of its eponymous hero (?) I googled Baron Avro Manhattan before writing this review. I needed to know—did he exist? Kelly could be having a joke at our expense. Baron Avro Manhattan could well be a figment of the playwright’s creative imagination.
A Doll's House at The Exchange, North Shields
Henrik Ibsen Elysium Theatre Company The Exchange, North Shields 1 October 2022 Listing details and ticket info... Share: It’s a century and half since the première of Ibsen’s great play, but such is the impact and the relevance its powerful writing can evoke, we’re hard put to place it in the same time span as, say, the Zulu wars. In many ways, A Doll’s House marked the birth of modern drama, an iconoclastic piece of theatre which shook the very marital foundations of our society.
Wildfires Steal Serenity in Flagstaff
As I stood on the top of Mt. Elden overlooking the San Francisco Peaks, I had no words—mainly, tears. As a local citizen, I felt devastated for the families having to uproot their lives once again due to another fire. As a trail runner, I watched my paradise being decimated in real time. The forests, the wildlife—gone. The Pipeline Fire, 6 miles north of Flagstaff, AZ, was raging and 40 mph winds were not giving our beautiful mountain a fighting chance.
High Country Running: Serenity gone as fires burn near Flagstaff once more
Standing on top of Mount Elden overlooking the San Francisco Peaks, just before the national forest closed, I had no words, mainly tears. As a trail runner, I watched my paradise being decimated in real time. The Pipeline Fire was raging and the 40 mph winds were not giving our beautiful mountain a fighting chance. Looking onward to Fremont Peak, I hearkened back to the countless adventures I’ve had, running and hiking up the Weatherford Trail.
Red Ellen at Northern Stage
You’d go a long way to beat Wils Wilson’s production of Caroline Bird’s new play about the legendary North East politician and heroine of the Jarrow March, Ellen Wilkinson. At three hours, it’s pretty long, but such are the visual treats (and not a video screen in sight!), the power of the acting from the eight-strong cast—a true ensemble—and the strength of the script that it rarely drags. Plus which, Wilson stamps her own individual style on each scene.

WAXA BELTA HELTA SKELTA
Serena Ramsey Laurels, Whitley Bay 14–24 September 2021 Look for tickets... Share: Serena Ramsey in WAXA BELTA HELTA SKELTA As play titles go, this one is slightly more cumbersome than say, Hamlet, but then the soliloquy is longer. Serena Ramsey writes, directs and acts this forty-five minutes one-woman piece and brings to it a good deal of energy, ribaldry, humour and occasional pathos.
Coast at Laurels Theatre, Whitley Bay
Tom Kelly, Ellen McNally, Sarah Tarbitt, Alex Oates, Eleanor Faye Laurels Theatre Laurels Theatre, Whitley Bay 12–14 August 2021 Look for tickets... Share: Whitley Bay is ill-served by theatre. Even in non-pandemic times, coastites were starved; the Playhouse’s diet of mainly tribute bands, stand-ups and the occasional musical doesn’t quite tap into whatever intellectual hunger is out there (quite a lot, I suspect). And the town’s had no other theatre building.
Vascular and lymphatic abnormalities
Abstract Skin manifestations caused by vascular and lymphatic abnormalities are numerous. Damage to blood vessels whether through inflammation, arterial atherosclerosis or venous hypertension results in restricted blood flow, hindering micronutrient and oxygen delivery to the local skin. Localized cutaneous changes can give clues regarding aetiology, and localized ischaemia and ulceration can result in significant morbidity.

COVID-19 vaccination - Don’t forget the lymphatics!
Dear Editor The impact of recently-developed vaccines against COVID-19 is unarguably impressive. High levels of defence against infection and even higher levels of protection against severe disease have been achieved in an unprecedented time-frame. Such advances are a reminder of the power of the adaptive immune system.
Seed Banks as Incidental Fungi Banks: Fungal Endophyte Diversity in Stored Seeds of Banana Wild Relatives
Introduction Fungal endophytes (hereafter, endophytes) are fungi which live asymptomatically inside plant tissues (Petrini, 1991; Hardoim et al., 2015), and appear to be present in all land plants (Stone et al., 2000; Rodriguez et al., 2009; Rashmi et al., 2019). Certain endophytes are known to provide various benefits to the plant host, such as stress tolerance, growth promotion, and disease resistance (Redman et al., 2002; Waller et al., 2005; Bilal et al., 2018).

Valley Uprising (2014)
23 October 2014 | loren-white-141-405028 | Amazing does not say enough Maybe since I've known Royal and Liz Robbins for over 40 years, you may think I am biased. But this is unquestionably the best documentary of the Yosemite climbing experience I've ever seen. Great filming, commentary, and wonderful sense of humor through it all. The characterizations of these climbers was excellent.

Angels of the North
Adapted by Louis Roberts and Gillian Hambleton Northumberland Theatre Company The Exchange North Shields 14 March 2020 Share: For thirty years, Gillian Hambleton has been at the helm of Northumberland Theatre Company. Rural theatre is often fairly conservative, playing safe for the circuit of small scattered venues far from the radical zeitgeist of the big cities. And Northumberland is the least populated county in England.
Playing Up! 12 at Northern Stage, Newcastle
Debra Fisher / Rowena Gray / Lewis Cuthbert / Lee Stewart / Mary Pickin / Elle Douglas Playing Up Northern Stage, Newcastle 14 to 15 February 2020 Share: There’s an inevitability about the rise in popularity of the 10-15 minute play. The internet generation, nurtured on a short attention span often can’t be bothered with the demands of a three hour drama; Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, emails, texts and God knows what else are lining up and demanding attention.
The Strange Tale of Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel
Paul Hunter Told by an Idiot with Theatre Royal Plymouth, Royal & Derngate Northampton and Unity Theatre Liverpool Northern Stage, Newcastle 11 to 15 February 2020 Share: Little can weaken our affection for Charlie Chaplin or Laurel & Hardy. Decades have not seen their reputations tarnished by scandal, impropriety or the vagaries of fashion. They were stars who survived that notorious shift from silent movies to talkies which destroyed many of their contemporaries.
Cinderella at The Exchange, North Shields
Dale Meeks Mendes Management The Exchange, North Shields 3 to 22 December 2019 Look for tickets... Share: I have in my time seen more pantos than you could throw a custard pie at; many have been tacky affairs, vehicles for whatever minor celebs have been roped in to boost ticket sales. Hang on though! The very phrase “minor celebs” could be a tautology. Do any of them merit the adjective “major”? I was once commissioned to write a panto.
I Have Met the Enemy and the Enemy is Us
Devised with writer Hassan Mahamdallie CommonWealth with Northern Stage Byker Community Centre 16 to 26 October 2019 Share: Northern Stage travels out to Byker Community Centre for their latest effort, a joint production with the radical theatre makers Common Wealth whose policy is to create and stage site-specific theatre in working class areas—and they don’t get much more working class than Byker, This is a Newcastle inner-city district sloping down to the River Tyne.
Women Warriors at The Exchange North Shields
JoJo Kirtley, Olivia Hannah, Becky Glendenning-Laycock and Juliana Mensah Workie Ticket Theatre Company The Exchange North Shields 9 October 2019 Share: There was an almost evangelical feel to The Exchange bar and auditorium, a sense of great anticipation at a long and hard-worked project finally coming to fruition. The place was packed, with an audience about ninety per cent female.

The Fats of Life
We once thought ourselves a superior species, increasingly the evidence points to us being the most stupid. PETER MORTIMER ponders a growing problem. ONE OF THE MOST INTERESTING MOMENTS at the recent Whitley Bay Film Festival came in BBC North East’s archive TV extracts of several decades worth of the region’s news programmes and documentaries.
Bobby Robson Saved My Life
Tom Kelly Customs House, Ion Productions, Quayside Productions Customs House, South Shields 16 to 20 July 2019 Look for tickets... Share: In one way, this play resembles Samuel Beckett’s stage masterpiece. With Beckett, we never get to see Godot of the title. Here, the eponymous Bobby Robson is never on stage.
Noughts & Crosses
Malorie Blackman adapted by Sabrina Mahfouz Pilot Theatre Northern Stage 7 to 11 May 2019 Look for tickets... Share: I’ve never read Malorie Blackman’s acclaimed novel but wish I had. Its premise is a provocative one: a UK turned on its head and run by a black elite (The Crosses) while the underprivileged white underclass (The Noughts) plots guerrilla action and violent terrorist resistance.
Chekhov's First Play
Anton Chekhov, Ben Kidd & Bush Moukarzel Dead Centre with Battersea Arts Centre Northern Stage 25 to 27 April 2019 Share: Chekhov’s first play (whose title is debatable, but Platonov is the most favoured) was written at the age of nineteen and generally considered cumbersome, overwritten and unstageable.
Where Do We Belong?
Lee Mattinson, Laurence Wilson & Company Young Company Northern Stage 24 to 27 April 2019 Look for tickets... Share: Maybe in a decade’s time many of these fine young actors will be working for Barclays Bank or will have seen their careers swallowed by some corporate behemoth.
Theatre review: Just Like That—the Tommy Cooper Show at The Exchange, North Shields
Various scriptwriters Hambledon Productions The Exchange, North Shields 20 April 2019 Share: Watching John Hewer’s tribute to Tommy Cooper, I realised just how similar two of Britain greatest recent comedians were. What united Tommy Cooper and Frankie Howerd—and what few of our current crop of stand-ups possess—is that ability to have us falling about merely through walking on stage. Put several of Cooper’s quips in cold print and they hardly represent the pinnacle of comic genius.
Rain Man at Northern Stage, Newcastle
Dan Gordon Classic Screen to Stage Theatre Company Northern Stage, Newcastle 8 to 13 April 2019 Look for tickets... Share: Within the opening moments of Dan Gordon’s play, I realised why I relish so much stage adaptations of American movies. It’s the fierce energy of the script, translating itself from the big screen with a momentum and fizzing electricity that can make much our domestic theatre seem on sleeping pills. Playwrights can learn a lot from screen writers.
The Shape of the Pain
Chris Thorpe China Plate Northern Stage 5 April 2019 Share: Art can make us feel many things: anger, joy, fear, jealousy, desire, lust, longing, melancholy, sadness, inspiration, confusion, ecstasy, despair, relief, confusion—the list goes on. The one thing art finds trouble making us feel—unless it literally lays hands on us—is physical pain. Which is why this short one-woman play, which has so much going for it, can only partially succeed.
My Mental Breakdown - A Musical
Max Kingdom We Are Kingdom The Exchange North Shields 8 to 9 March 2019 As play titles go, this one takes some beating and might suggest a lightweight approach to what is a sombre subject matter. That’s not the case and at times the piece does struggle to shake off the yoke of internalised existential angst. Depression is a growing global phenomenon and has been a feature in the lives of several of those involved in the North East group We Are Kingdom, hence the motivation for the play.
Wonderland at Northern Stage
Beth Steel Nottingham Playhouse and Northern Stage Northern Stage 27 February to 9 March 2019 Look for tickets... The media would scarce think it worth a mention if a play about the city of London were written by someone whose dad had worked in a bank. But miners are different, so the fact Beth Steel, author of this play based round the '84 miners’ strike, is the daughter of a Nottingham miner has caused a good deal of interest. She’s also a female writing about a fiercely masculine world.
Fool Britannia at Gosforth Civic Theatre
Dan Lees & Neil Frost The Establishment Gosforth Civic Theatre 21 February 2019 Rather like Tommy Cooper, the two actors from The Establishment seem to make us laugh effortlessly and with the simplest of actions or words. An illusion of course. On stage, nothing works without effort, albeit at times that effort is invisible. Thus an entire piece is built round the word ‘Shakespeare’, uttered in various ways and with various theatrical gestures lampooning the whole cultural canon the man attracts.
No Miracles Here
Lee Mattinson The Letter Room Northern Stage 15 to 16 February 2019 The programme notes to this play include the words, "we were apprehensive about the challenge of making a show that explored the complex and sensitive subject of mental health with humour, energy, music and dancing." As you might be. More on that later. Let’s say firstly that the play adopts the simple technique of seeing the whole production as a single unit.
Approaching Empty
Ishy Din Tamasha, Kiln Theatre & Live Theatre Live Theatre 6 to 23 February 2019 Look for tickets... This is the first full-length play I’ve seen on Tyneside with an all-Asian cast: five male, one female. So how come at times it reminded me of Chekhov? It’s something to do with that self-destructive nature of close-knit families and friends. Here the setting is not a small estate far from Moscow, but a small taxi firm in an unnamed northern town.
Clean-shaven of Cullercoats joins the Fuzz
You might prefer me clean-shaven or ask 'Why all the fuzz?' I AM GROWING A BEARD. The trouble is, so is almost everyone else. Time was, a beard was a symbol of a towering intellect. People such as Karl Marx, D.H.Lawrence or Allen Ginsberg were all liberally endowed with facial hair. They had towering intellects and thus (I argued) had earned the right to sport generous beards.
BEIGE! The word sounds like a belch and is fifty shades duller than grey!
THE MOST ALARMING NEWS OF LAST WEEK had nothing to do with either the monstrosities of Trump nor the British politicians’ Brexit death-wish. A small news item crept in unnoticed by many but not, of course, by your eagle-eyed correspondent who bravely and fearlessly goes where others won’t, his only ambition being his courageous search for truth, exposure of despots, unearthing of falsehoods, revelation of (Okay, just get on with it – Ed.) Right.
A seasonal visitation from The Spirit of Christmas Nowhere. . .
MAYBE IT WAS EATING that last Terry’s Chocolate Orange that did it. Let’s face it, I was full enough after just two. But whatever the reason there it suddenly was, appearing before me like some strange, spectral entity. ‘Blimey,’ I said. ‘You look like some strange, spectral entity’. ‘I AM a strange, spectral entity,’ The Thing replied. ‘I am the Spirit of Christmas Nowhere.’ ‘The Spirit of Christmas Nowhere?,’ I spluttered.
Luna at The Exchange, North Shields
Luna Sarah Argent Theatre Hullabaloo The Exchange, North Shields 1 December 2018 Young children can be theatre’s most challenging audience. They don’t give a fig for normal theatrical convention and if not absorbed or entertained they’re likely to talk amongst themselves, wander off or just fall asleep. Theatre Hullabaloo’s latest show, which is on the road for a full month before three weeks at its Darlington home, is aimed at 2- to 5-year-olds—not an age many companies target.
