California’s investment in secondary school redesign is a down payment on our students’ futures
Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... By Peter Ross Just down the street from where Disney’s Imagineers dream up new worlds in Anaheim, the Secondary School Redesign Pilot teams recently gathered with an equally audacious ambition: to reimagine middle and high school for every young Californian. The energy in the room — 14 teams representing urban and rural communities, districts, community organizations, and school systems across the state — felt like the beginning of a movement.

I have on my desk a piece of slate. A fragment; shaped like a crag and flecked with fool’s gold. I picked it up on Jura almost ten years ago and it has been a lucky charm during the writing of three books. It was part of George Orwell’s roof. I was on the island to see Barnhill, the house where he wrote Nineteen Eighty-Four. The visit was part of a story I was researching about the experience of reading Orwell in the Age of Trump.
Why Paris Designed Its Peculiarly Popular Grand Graveyards to Evoke a Celebration of Life Amid All the Death
Cemeteries that inspired parks serve as unlikely tourist attractions in the City of Light and prove that the end of the line is just the start of a new story One summer afternoon in Père Lachaise, the sprawling cemetery in the east of Paris, a white-haired man, neatly dressed, was tending his own grave. First, he brushed away a spider web that had formed in a corner of his chapel, a small box-like structure that he had chosen as his place of rest.

Meeting England’s 3,000-year-old horse — and the people who care for it
Three teenage boys in hoodies lay sprawled between the hind legs of the Uffington White Horse.
Upon a White Horse by Peter Ross
Beautiful and strange, ancient monuments have long captured our attention and curiosity. We stand in awe before them, asking who created the Uffington White Horse - and why? What was it like to live in the shadow of Hadrian's Wall? What stories would the towering megaliths of Stonehenge and Avebury tell if they could speak?

Small Finds #1
At the darkest time of year, when spirits are low and days short and the colours of spring seem far away, I like to go to the Mitchell Library and spend a while looking at the carpets. They can be seen on floors two through to five of this elegant Glasgow building. Actually, ‘seen’ is the wrong verb. Better to say ‘experienced’ or, depending on your taste, ‘endured’. They help keep the library quiet, deadening footsteps, but are themselves the loudest thing in the place.

Peter Ross on the Secrets of a Fenland Church
In Holy Trinity, Stow Bardolph, a few miles south of King’s Lynn, there is a side-chapel, and in that side-chapel there is a wonderful, terrible thing. Enter the small church. You are likely to be the only visitor. No sign will tell you what you are about to see. It is as if they would rather you didn’t know. Pass up the nave and into the chancel and turn left through an arched doorway. Walk to the north-west corner and you will find a cabinet of dark wood.

Rural: The Lives of the Working Class Countryside by Rebecca Smith, published by William Collins Rebecca Smith’s Rural: The Lives of the Working Class Countryside is part memoir, part sociopolitical examination, as Smith uses her own experiences, and those of her family, as the inspiration to examine the economic and class distinctions involved in rural living and, more pertinently, working.
7 Tips On Writing An Effective Essay
There is one thing that most students hate about college – writing essays. It’s this daunting and tiring assignment they put off until the last minute. We’ve all been there staring blankly at the screen, trying to start an essay. Still, there are some students who always find composing a piece of cake. Do they know some tricks?
Meeting Net Zero: How the Manufacturing Industry Can Help
The UK government’s net zero target aims to reduce the country’s greenhouse gas emissions by 100% from 1990 levels – by 2050. However, in a new report, the government has admitted that the new strategy could fail to meet the legally enforceable targets. The government’s recently released Powering Up Britain policy showed revised calculations that they would only deliver 92% of the emission reductions needed to meet the UK’s 2030 goal.

Steeple Chasing - Books from Scotland

Steeple Chasing: Around Britain by Church By Peter Ross Published by Headline At the last four funerals I have been to, there hasn’t been a single hymn. I shouldn’t be too surprised: the growing unpopularity of Christian rituals of death is one of the signs of our times.

The best books for death-positive memoirs
Who am I? For 10 years, I edited Morbid Curiosity magazine. I believe that curiosity is the most important aspect of being human. More than the simple desire to know things, curiosity is a tool as powerful as a scalpel or a searchlight. Curiosity is a way to effect change, in our own lives and in the world. Morbid Curiosity magazine taught me to believe in the power of story, especially in the form of memoirs. Only by telling our own stories can we overcome our fears and find inspiration in death.

A Long Weekend In Amsterdam – Scottish Review of Books
Perhaps you can judge a book by its cover. In this case black-and-white with just a little blue on the front. The lettering for the title and author is unadorned caps. A couple in late middle age, both in overcoats and hats and the woman holding an umbrella against the sleet (the man stands a step or two back from her, and is unprotected), the pair of them isolated on a railed footbridge, with water beneath. The effect (computer edited?) is plain, quite stark. Quite zen.
Underland – Scottish Review of Books
Underland May 20, 2019 | by Peter Ross ROBERT Macfarlane, whose career has been in steep ascent since 2003, began with a book about mountains – their fatal, perhaps even natal allure; in such places one can meet one’s death yet also feel reborn. He is known as a prose-poet of high places, ‘north-minded’ as he once called himself, sherpa-ing readers to the Himalayas; the Cairngorm plateau; the upper branches of a wind-bent beech.
Saving Orwell - Boston Review
This essay appears in print in Global Dystopias. “It was a bright cold day in April,” said Richard Blair, “and the clocks were striking thirteen.” Blair is seventy-three and the son of George Orwell. To witness him stand at a lectern and read the opening line of his father’s great final novel, 1984, is to experience a sense of completion, an equation solved. We were in Senate House, now part of the University of London, for 1984 Live.
