Is Terrorism the Weapon of the Weak?
By Raymond Ibrahim Published on May 14, 2024 The “Muslim grievance” mantra is back.
Sudan's Year-Long Civil War Set to Cause Catastrophic Famine By Summer
By Peter Rowden Published on April 15, 2024 Food and hospitality. Those were two of the things that stood out to me most when I traveled around Sudan by public transportation in 2022. When I think of Sudan, I think of the scent of beans wafting from a pot in a crowded open-air market at night. Every town I visited had a bean stand, usually in the central market near the bus station, where people would gather to socialize late into the night.
Understanding the Sudanese Civil War
Wars are too quickly forgotten. A conflict starts and the whole world watches. When it drags on with no resolution, the world moves on — especially if there is no ideological battle being fought, or if another, fresher conflict grabs our attention. Such is the case with Sudan. The world may be ready to let the violence there fade into the background, seeing it as another Yemen or Somalia, a place of perpetual violence better left ignored.
The Evil of Ordinary People
By Peter Rowden Published on October 15, 2023 EDITORS NOTE: For a slightly different perspective on the war in Israel, we offer this take from a Stream contributor living in the region. It’s interesting to contrast Peter’s opinion with that of Dr. Brown in his latest article and notice how they both conclude with the necessity for love, even if the route they take is vastly different. This week, people have been handing out free sweets on the streets of the city where I live. Why?
The Leper at the Gates
The Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth is a large, modern structure, erected over the ruins of the little stone house where Mary is said to have received her visit from Gabriel. Every Saturday night, the church holds a candlelight service in celebration of this proclamation. The symbolism is profound, for when Jesus was conceived, a Light came into this dark world.
The Complicated Reality of Palestinian Christians in Israel
By Peter Rowden Published on August 22, 2023 The Synagogue Church is hard to find. Unobtrusive, tucked away in the narrow, winding alleys of Nazareth’s Old City — you have to know exactly where it is to find it. Even then you could walk right past its walls without realizing it. Inside a little courtyard, it’s a small stone building said to have been constructed around AD 1200. Ancient tradition says it sits on the site of the synagogue where Jesus preached.
Day of Sacrifice
Today is the first day of the festival of Eid al-Adha, and Muslims are sacrificing sheep. I live in a Muslim city, where they say that up until just a few years ago, the streets here (literally) ran with blood on this day each year. A few years ago, in the interest of sanitation and modernization, the government mandated that all sacrifices be held in designated areas. This was necessary because of the sheer number of animals being slaughtered.
Israeli Survivor of Palestinian Terrorism Raises Alarm Over Radicals in U.S.
By Tyler O'Neil Published on May 25, 2023 ORLANDO, Fla. — What can America learn from Israel? David Rubin, former mayor of Shiloh, the modern settlement close to the ancient site of Israel’s Tabernacle Tel Shiloh, survived a Palestinian terror attack and urges the U.S. to take seriously the axis between radical Islam and the American Left.
Churches Attacked in Khartoum
As two rival generals battle for dominance in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, the situation for the Christian minority in the city has worsened. Several churches in Khartoum have been attacked this month. It could mark the beginning of an upsurge of persecution against Christians in Sudan. Khartoum is divided by the confluence of the Nile into three cities: Khartoum proper, Khartoum North, also known as Bahri, and Omdurman.
Sudanese Christians Welcome Refugees From the Capital
I visited Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, in January of 2022. The city felt like a thread pulled taut and ready to snap. I didn’t know it then, but it was in better shape then than it is now. Dictator Omar Bashir had been ousted in a coup in 2019, and Sudan had been set to transition to democracy. But in autumn 2021, the military, led by general Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, staged another coup and took over the government. In 2022, civilians were protesting in the streets every other day.
Ramadan: A Time to Reminisce Over Bloodshed and Slavery
Ramadan — once a curiosity limited to the Muslim world but now a “celebrated” feature of the West — is upon us.
Happy Easter … Again
Happy Easter, brothers and sisters! No, this wasn’t posted late. Where I live, today is Easter. No, I don’t mean that it’s April 9 here. It’s April 16, which is Easter — an amazing sign of Christian unity, besides being the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection. Christians around the world have different beliefs about the right date to celebrate Easter. If you know that, you might think I mean today is the day the dominant Christian sect here celebrates the Resurrection.
How to Combat Radical Islam in America
I grew up in America, but I live in the Middle East now, where hospitality is something sacred. In that sense the culture here is much more like that of the Bible’s than the culture is in America.
This Month is a Time for Spiritual Warfare
Sunset this evening will mark the beginning of Ramadan, the Muslim Holy Month. In Islamic countries like the one where I live, it will be illegal for anyone to eat or drink in public during daylight hours. Muslims throughout the world will be fasting from food and water from sun-up to sun-down every day, eating and drinking only at night. Devout parents often require even their children to go without food and water. Christians throughout the Middle East are fasting, too.
