Letter: Vote for Thompson and positivity
Why is it that Mike Thompson's opponent is running such a negative campaign with ads that spew lies, hate, slander and innuendos. Is it because he has nothing positive to say. He claims to be a Democrat but his campaign is right out of the Trump playbook, and we know where that has gotten us. I surely don't want a man like that representing me. On the other hand a vote for Mike is a vote for a man who we know cares for his constituents and works for them in a positive manner every day.
Murphy Backs Trump Push to Limit Mail-In Voting
New Jersey Globeupdated 7m agofirst covered Aug 29, 4:15 AM ET Read the original ↗ New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has thrown his support behind the Trump administration's effort to restrict mail-in voting access. This represents a significant shift from typical Democratic opposition to voting restrictions, signaling potential bipartisan recognition that election security measures deserve serious consideration.

TRENTON,NJ – The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and the New Jersey Department of Agriculture’s (NJDA) Division of Animal Health have confirmed a new Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) poultry case in an Essex County live bird market. The disease response is being coordinated between State and Federal partners.
Our lives depend on it. Why this election means more in N.J. than just who wins.
The friendly faces were happy to be reunited. Warm smiles were exchanged. Small talk was made. A light kosher meal was served. Then things got tense. They often do these days when you’re Jewish, even sitting among friends on a recent night in a Jewish community center in Bergen County. At the mere mention of Election Day, ear-to-ear grins vanished. Feelings of exhaustion and anxiety were expressed.
Phil Murphy: Dive deep into plays and trigger the heap
Lately dramaturgy has been on my mind. I know, it’s because I am readying a lecture and work session on play analysis for one of our groups. To simplify, what I just said and remove it from the world of jargon, I am going to teach a class in “how to read a play.” The play reading I am talking about involves more than a cursory read. It’s the kind of deep dive into a play — finding its dramatic through line and arc. What the play is about.

Phil Murphy: 'Waitress,' 'Wizard,' wardrobes and more at Old Town Playhouse
It’s July and one season ends and another begins at the Old Town Playhouse. As the curtain rises on the 2024-2025 theater season, audiences are in for a treat with a lineup of diverse and captivating shows that promise to entertain and delight. From heartfelt musicals to side-splitting comedies, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Heaven Sent: A Night at Sister Act London
The musical version of the hit 90s film, Sister Act, first materialised at the London Palladium 15 years ago. It was an immediate hit. It crossed the pond to Broadway, where some inexplicable changes were made, and has since toured the UK. The huge announcement was made that Whoopi Goldberg, the film's Deloris Van Cartier, wanted to do the show here in London - not playing the Mother Superior, as was assumed, but her original role of Deloris.
Review: Kiss me Kate at The Barbican London
★★★★ The Barbican has given Londoners a summer treat for the past couple of years, and 2024 is no exception. Kiss Me Kate opened in a blaze of glory at the Barbican and looks set to be the must-see show of the season. Adapted Shakespeare Classic Kiss Me Kate is a musical that has had frequent airings in London and on Broadway over the past 70 years or so since it was first performed and has always proved a crowd-pleaser; now, it has arrived at the Barbican Theatre.
Difficult to find "Fawlt" with: An evening at Fawlty Towers
★★★★ Like many people I'm quite sure, I raised an eyebrow - well, both if I'm being completely honest - when I heard there was to be a stage adaptation of one of Britain's all-time greatest sitcoms, Fawlty Towers. I mean, why? Whose bright idea was it to adapt the 1970s classic comedy into a two-hour play over 45 years after its final TV outing? Well, John Cleese as it happens. And if anybody has the right and the clout to pull it off, it's the great JC.
Phil Murphy: One season ends, another begins
Ah, the season is winding down. We’re in performance on the final show of the 2023-24 MainStage season at the Old Town Playhouse. “The Wedding Singer” plays for the next few weeks, closing on May 25. It’s a wholly entertaining show, based on the Adam Sandler film of the same name. A real throwback to those who fondly remember the ‘80s with an eye toward its sillier side. The show was a hit on Broadway when it ran nearly 20 years ago. Amazing that it’s taken us this long to get it on our OTP schedule.
Phil Murphy: 'Murder,' 'Midsummer' and how far we'll go to avoid painful truths
The Beast and his Beauty, Belle, are happily ensconced in their palace, audiences are happy, and the massive show is now put to bed. Phew! What an undertaking. I directed it the last time we did the show in 2005, and I had almost forgotten what a monster show it is to put together. Add in the fact that it was double-cast this outing, and … well … It was quite an undertaking. Congrats to all for a marvelous performance. Now we’re onto the spring and all the other shows needing our attention.
Phil Murphy: Find strength in vulnerability with 'Circle Mirror Transformation'
I remember the first time I had to perform a monologue in front of my acting class. I was horribly unsure of myself. Though well-rehearsed, I still felt unprepared and inadequate. I looked at my classmates and teacher, my audience. They looked expectant, even judgmental. I felt like they were waiting for me to fail. I was self-conscious and feeling exposed. That I might reveal too much of myself. In a word: I felt vulnerable. As I continued to speak, something changed.
Phil Murphy: Pick an evergreen winner and feel holiday magic at OTP
I have a favorite story of navigating the bustling streets of the city, as my family embarked on our annual adventure to find the perfect Christmas tree amidst the urban landscape. Armed with excitement and bundled in warm layers, we ventured through the snowy streets, our boots crunching on the frozen ground. The scent of pine enveloped us, guiding our way through the maze of shoppers hurrying to buy their Christmas gifts. In the crisp, wintry weather, a sense of holiday magic filled the air.
FOS PM: ESPN's Value Soaring
Former Oakland A’s senior executive Andy Dolich has written to every MLB club owner asking them to rethink the impending decision to approve the team’s relocation to Las Vegas. It’s an uphill climb, if not an impossible ask, as the A’s deal is all certain to pass.
NY-NJ Is the Clear Choice For the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final
Our region is known for hustle and bustle. But even by our standards, this summer’s lineup of events at MetLife Stadium was frenzied. From May 26-28, Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour came to town. On July 29 and 30, Beyonce played before two audiences of over 100,000 attendees. Starting August 30, Bruce Springsteen thrilled three capacity home-state crowds. Over the course of the summer, more than 3 million spectators passed through MetLife Stadium’s gates.
Phil Murphy: Pull the cord and let rip into playhouse offerings
What a wild and crazy couple of weeks at the Old Town Playhouse. We already have three shows in motion with more in the immediate offing. Last weekend we kicked off the season with the opening of “Ripcord,” the hit comedy by David Lindsay-Abaire. Abaire is known for his musical adaptation of Kimberly Akimbo which won both the 2023 Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical and Tony Award for Best Original Score.

New York and New Jersey Are Ready to Host the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final
Today’s guest columnists are New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy. On a sunny weekend afternoon earlier this year, the stands at Metlife Stadium were packed to capacity. Although it was only an exhibition game, 82,500 buzzing, passionate fans turned out to watch a showdown between two elite football clubs with massive followings in the New York New Jersey region. Of course, the “football” we’re referring to here is soccer.
Phil Murphy: 'Wedding Singer,' 'Finding Nemo' in seasonal announcement
It’s midsummer and the nights pass dreamily (cute, huh?). Thank you, Mr. Shakespeare, for the wonderful image. And that conjures up lazy days and eves sittin’ and rockin’ on the porch without a care in the world. If only that were true! In reality, we at the Old Town Playhouse are gearing up for another full season of shows. As I have mentioned in the past, OTP is ruled by the Young Company all summer with camps, workshops and classes and their concomitant productions.
New Jersey Governor keen to host Premier League and Champions League matches
The so-called ’39th’ Premier League game has been discussed before and UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin recently hinted that a Champions League final could one day be played in the US. “I know that the clubs have not been wild about that in Europe but I’d love to think that it would happen,” Murphy said. “You would have Barcelona playing Real Madrid in New Jersey at some point in a regular season or in a Champions League game. I would love that.
Phil Murphy: 'Downtime' is full of shows, parties and camps
It’s June and our season is almost over as we only have shows this weekend for the Young Company in their energetic performance of “Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr.,” which is the final show of the 2022-23 MainStage season. Now we turn our eyes toward the summer and next season. First up is our annual Gala Celebration on Thursday, June 22 with an Encore performance on Friday, June 23. This is our 24th event and is a major undertaking for many of our volunteers and enjoyed by many more donors and patrons.
Phil Murphy: Embrace hilarity with 'The Play That Goes Wrong' and 'Something Rotten'
Well, it’s closing weekend for “The Play that Goes Wrong.” Have you seen it yet? You should. Two nights to go and absolutely worth it. This laugh-riot of a show is bringing down the house. Both figuratively and literally. In no uncertain terms things go wrong. In fact, everything goes wrong. Props are mislaid. People are mislaid. Nothing that should be attached remains so. Walls fall down. Even the floor falls apart. You name it and it probably happens or doesn’t, as the case may be. And it’s hilarious.
Youth mental health is at a breaking point in Michigan and New Jersey
Gretchen Whitmer and Phil Murphy | The Detroit News Coast to coast, America’s youth mental health crisis is playing out in homes, schools, and hospitals. Parents seeking treatment for struggling kids face long waitlists for an appointment — if there is even a pediatric therapist in their area. School counselors are swamped. Even emergency rooms are overwhelmed. At every level, the system is strained by unprecedented rates of mental health distress among children.
New Jersey will de-emphasize college degrees when hiring for many state jobs
New Jersey today joined the growing list of states that are de-prioritizing four-year college degrees when hiring for state jobs, with Gov. Phil Murphy signing an executive order directing the state Civil Service Commission (CSC) to revise and reduce educational requirements for a wide range of state jobs. “We are tearing down the so-called paper ceiling,” Murphy said at a press conference alongside acting CSC head Allison Chris Myers.
Phil Murphy: Wide-ranging season ends with laughs
Those quiet moments I mentioned in an earlier article about the Old Town Playhouse are well past us now, and what’s current is a smorgasbord of offerings. Having just closed “The Laramie Project” and a one-night-only performance of “Remembering Patsy Cline” featuring Judy Harrison, we are now in the final stretch of what has been a very interesting and wide-ranging season. OTP and the building are breathing once more, testing their legs with activity.

Murphy takes dig at DeSantis, earns ridicule for ‘rosy’ State of the State address
If you listened to Governor Phil Murphy’s first in person State of the State address since the pandemic on Tuesday? You could be forgiven to thinking that the Garden State wasn’t experiencing record inflation, rampant crime, and worst-in-the-nation taxes. You would’ve correctly picked up on the fact that the Democrat governor, now serving his second term, has national ambitions.

Phil Murphy: Our senses explain why theater captivates us
It’s that (most wonderful) time of year. The holidays are upon us and for another brief moment Old Town Playhouse is quiet once again. “The Spongebob Musical” was a hit, offering much enjoyment. Coming in January is the Young Company’s “Clue, High School Edition,” which is murderously funny. The Young Company’s Holiday Cabaret sang in the season with joy and wonder featuring 11 of the Young Company singers.
Stocks pumped up Murphy couple’s income in 2021
Inflation may be battering New Jerseyans this year but don’t worry about Phil and Tammy Murphy, Save Jerseyans! They’re doing just fine. Far more than fine in fact. They’re flush-er than ever. According to NJ.com: “After watching his income dip below $1 million in 2020, Gov. Phil Murphy saw it jump dramatically last year, to just under $5 million, according to partial tax returns and a tax summary released by his office Thursday.
Phil Murphy: Around the playhouse, 'quiet' is a relative term
It’s a rare “quiet” moment at the Old Town Playhouse. And I say that with tongue firmly planted in cheek. Quiet around the Playhouse is a relative term. Though it may appear that little is going on from the outside, inside OTP’s heart continues to beat. Rather vigorously. A few weeks ago, we closed an enjoyable production of “Murder on the Orient Express.” A twisty and satisfying performance of Agatha Christie’s classic to start our season.
Murphy channels Obama, rips "people who clutch the Bible" in Florida "
It didn’t stop his rise, Save Jerseyans, particularly since most Democrat base voters agree with the sentiment, but Barack Obama’s “bitter clingers” line continues to life in infamy. “They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations,” the future president complained back in April 2008.
A wake-up call for youth mental health
The school year is in full swing – a welcome return to normal after two years of disrupted learning. But there’s nothing routine about the mental health crisis confronting American young people. Mental health hospitalizations are up 61 percent for children under age 19, according to Clarify Health Institute. The crisis predates COVID-19, but the pandemic certainly hasn’t helped. More than a third of high school students reported experiencing poor mental health during the pandemic, the CDC reports.

Price of Phil Murphy's favorite "New Jersey" fruit likely to spike post-Ian "
We’re coming up on the fifth anniversary of that infamous 2017 gubernatorial debate when Phil Murphy – asked “what is your favorite New Jersey fruit and vegetable” – responded grapefruit and broccoli. The Garden State is known for its blueberries, cranberries, tomatoes and corn. Grapefruit? The popular citrus fruit for well-heeled brunchers isn’t grown here, at least not in any commercially significant quantity.

Phil Murphy: Mystery and more await this fall at the Old Town Playhouse
It was a dark and stormy night … So begins the clichéd mystery tale, whereby a group of seemingly innocent and unconnected people are brought together at a mansion/island/lodge (insert your favorite location) and are caught in a brutal storm that keeps them together as murder and mayhem ensue. Agatha Christie is, if not the queen, then the “Mother of the Golden Age Detective Mystery” who grew-up in the 1930s and created the template that many writers continue to follow today. I am one of them.
New Jersey court kills state law giving millions in tax breaks to Atlantic City casinos calling it unconstitutional
A Superior Court judge in New Jersey killed Monday a state law that granted Atlantic City’s casinos tens of millions of dollars in tax breaks, saying the measure “was passed on dubious grounds” and that it “violated the state Constitution.” Governor Phil Murphy and the state’s legislative leaders took a hit through this ruling, after having fast-tracked the legislation through the Legislature last year.
