Winter hiking in New Hampshire’s White Mountains requires equipment that can handle rapidly changing conditions. A calm, snowy trail below treeline can become a severe alpine environment within minutes once you reach an exposed ridge or summit. Temperatures may range from around 40F to –20F, while strong winds, blowing snow, freezing fog, rain, sleet, and glare ice can all occur during the same season.

The most important gear on any hike is your brain, and hiking hats keep it in good working order —from sun- and rain-resistant hats to fleece beanies and down-insulated hoods.

If you plan to hike this winter, buy insulated, waterproof winter hiking boots to protect your feet and keep them warm. Regular hiking boots intended for three-season conditions, mids, or trail runners lack enough insulation and may not stay waterproof in wet snow, puddles, or slush. Even regular leather hiking boots treated with waterproofing products can absorb moisture, becoming cold and potentially freezing during a long outing.
