How will Minnesota's drought conditions affect fall colors this year?

As we head from summer into fall, significant drought remains stubbornly entrenched across Minnesota. Most of the state is classified as having moderate or severe drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor — with a small portion of the state even listed in extreme drought. There are clear impacts of drought, such as poor crops and increased fire danger. But the affect that drought has on Minnesota’s trees can be less obvious — and take longer to become evident.

Zane Bakken calls out to a herd of about 65 goats. They start walking toward him, and congregate in a large clump. Bakken grabs a large branch of buckthorn — a stubborn invasive shrub found across Minnesota — leans it over, and snaps it as goats begin munching on its leaves. He says it’s a really good indicator of how hungry the herd is getting. “Every single one would be on this branch if they were looking for food, but it seems everyone’s pretty happy with themselves,” he says.
