Climate change is rendering Bangladesh’s half-century-old meteorological terminology struggling to keep pace with the ground reality. When the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) issued a forecast of “heavy to very heavy” rainfall in its regular bulletin on July 15, the terminology carried a precise technical meaning: rainfall of more than 44 millimetres (mm).
