1. Introduction The shipping industry is experiencing increasing pressure from international authorities to improve environmental performance, particularly in terms of pollutants emissions, since dirty fuels such as heavy oil and diesel are still largely employed due to economic reasons and easy refueling [1]. Cleaner alternative fuels must be considered to reduce dangerous emissions such as carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM).
