By Polly Nichols Community groups are spending thousands of dollars on traffic management for Santa parades and relying on donors and sponsors to cover budget shortfalls. Depending on the size of the event, they must pay companies for traffic controllers, road cones and signage for family Christmas festivities to comply with road regulations. Organisers of Auckland's Onehunga Christmas Parade expected to traffic management to cost $9000 - almost half of their $20,000 budget.

I enjoy writing this column, especially when it can be fun, as well as educational. This time, however, there is no way to put a lighthearted spin on the subject. Most people are aware of the disheartening problem of opioid addiction in our beautiful state and the rest of the nation. It is a current topic in the media. I feel like it is important to let you know how this epidemic is affecting you and your dentist. Many solutions are being offered, some by the Maine Legislature.
