Larry Wilson: Why is the U.S. attacking the International Criminal Court?
In theory, unless you have some New World Order paranoia, the International Criminal Court seems like a good idea, seeing as how there are international criminals, and justice is good. The court is in The Hague, and we have good, just memories of a previous sister institution there, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, taking down Slobodan Milošević, the former Yugoslavian president who was the first sitting head of state indicted by an international court.

Larry Wilson: Pasadena fire chief as parcel tax’s cheerleader Original
It’s not right for Donald Trump to make us pay for his TV campaign ads — and did you read where he kept sticking taxpayers with the bill weeks after he promised to stop? — and it’s not right for Pasadena City Hall to send public employees out to tout a new firefighting tax on the November ballot.
Larry Wilson: Trams not moving people at LAX Original
Writing about trains, fast Italian trains, in this space last week, prompted a lot of you to drop me notes, because everyone — read, men — has something to say about trains. It’s the steam in our locomotive, apparently. Plus, each of those everyones has an opinion. Judge Lance Ito, for instance, recalled the time “more than 50 years ago I rode on the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka. I was amazed at the breathtaking speed (I have an amusing story about this) and smoothness.
Larry Wilson: Italy’s fast trains arrive on time. What’s California’s excuse? Original
VENICE, Italy — For whatever Yankee, Puritan reasons, Americans’ view of Italian efficiency is that it isn’t: that the nation required a Mussolini, referenced in this space last week, for the trains to run on time.
Larry Wilson: Il Duce meets his American match Original
Vicenza, Italy — Here in the Veneto, the vast, wine-making plain heading west from Venice toward Milan in the wealthy north of this cobbled-together nation, over 56% of voters cast their ballots in the last national election for the Brothers of Italy, a right-wing populist party with some historical ties to neo-fascism. Which means a lot more in a country that in our grandparents’ time was actually ruled by fascists.

California Never: Why tech billionaires can’t build their new city
I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard people flying over the vast American West for the first time exclaim: “Who says we don’t have plenty of room for millions more people? There’s nothing but empty space down there!” Now, these are not necessarily people with master’s degrees in urban planning, to be sure. Empty space is one thing; water is another. The Mojave and Sonoran deserts don’t have a lot of it. Nor do Utah or West Texas, for that matter.
Larry Wilson: Progressive YIMBYs vs. progressive NIMBYs
There are two kinds of progressive Democratic California politicians. All and sundry are down with universal healthcare, justice for Palestine, and ICE out now-the boilerplate home truths of the clan. The split comes on housing.

Larry Wilson: Messing with the U.S. mail to mess with elections
Until recent years, I was the yaysayer when it came to the efficiency of the United States Postal Service, which I found could sometimes deliver mail on the following afternoon that I had posted the previous morning, at least within Southern California.

Larry Wilson: Tell Californians what UC athletes get paid
Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... When top University of California campuses pay student athletes large sums in exchange for use of their NIL — name, image, likeness — is it taxpayer money that is being spent? Of course it is. UCLA and Cal, the two UC campuses with the biggest athletic programs, claim that the pay is really just “revenue sharing” from ticket sales and broadcast contracts.

Larry Wilson: Will LA28 be a party or a taxpayer disaster? Original
When it comes to the Olympic Games sprinting our way in the summer of 2028, everyone wants to talk about money, and no one wants to talk about sports. Having been a witness to the glorious Southern California-wide fun that were the Olympics of 1984, not to mention their making so much money that we are literally still spending it on youth athletics throughout the region, makes me seriously question all that has gone wrong in the four decades since.
