Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

For my first official assignment, I covered a vigil for a beloved community-minded woman who was hit by a car on her way home.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Sparingly. I own a Remington 666 Sperry Rand that is woefully kept in storage.

How is social media changing news?

Infographics are shaping the way people think about concepts and events typically explored by news. That has its ups and downs.

What's your favorite social network?

Instagram, though the new overlords are trying to test me.

Why did you become a journalist?

To elevate the voice of others as well as elevate my own. Nonfiction has always fascinated me more than fiction.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Not high school, middle school. The first article I ever wrote was about fast food; Eric Schlosser's "Fast Food Nation" was a game changer.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Thus far, the article I am most proud of is a feature on a bar that no longer exists. I miss you, Witch Doctor's Lounge.

What's your favorite drink?

Tea, followed closely by water.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Outside, taking a walk inside the city.
