Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

The now-defunct Comics Buyer's Guide brought me on back when they revamped the magazine and brought on a bunch of reviewers.

How is social media changing news?

It's changed for the better by delivering news in real time, but at the same time non-credible sources have buried a lot of the actual truth.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

There's no comics fan, especially ones into photography, who doesn't love the all-too-down-to-Earth Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

There's a responsibility to not only tell the truth, but to promote worthy, often unrecognized efforts, whether creative, charitable, etc.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Opportunities have arisen in so many different ways, I'm not even sure I have a preference. Just don't knock on the bathroom door.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Word, Word, Word, going back to the 90s. Learning Photoshop when I have to upload a lot of images has become critical.

What's your favorite social network?

I remain partial to Facebook. The platform is better for extended engagements, both on a business and personal level.

Who do you wish followed you?

Gene Simmons. Elton John. George Lucas. Mitch Albom. All idols who any fanboy would love to have notice them!

Why did you become a journalist?

The need to get the truth out there is more important than ever. And the din of cat/cucumber vids makes worthy content all the more important

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I actually didn't get into journalism until I was in my 30s, so no high school paper for me. But I caught up quickly!

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I interviewed Trans-Siberian Orchestra co-founder Paul O'Neill, and artist Greg Hildebrandt. Both passed now, but two amazingly kind souls.

What's your favorite drink?

I love discovering craft brews. I've been a Dr Pepper fan since I was a kid. Green tea has become a healthier option in recent years, though.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

A nice walk down to the lake is great for decompressing. Going downstairs and spending time with the family is important. So is a night out!
