ここ数十年のうちに、神経科学は驚くべき進化を遂げてきたが、それでも脳の最重要部位にはまだまだ多くの謎が残されている。この最重要部位とは、つまり小脳のことだ。ラテン語で「小さな脳」を表す言葉を語源とするこの器官は、脳の後ろに小さなコブのようにくっついている。だが、この「小さな」という形容詞は、かなりの過小評価と言っていい。小脳にあるニューロン（神経細胞）は、脳内の全ニューロンの4分の3を占める。そして、複雑に絡まりあった脳のほかの部位のニューロンに比べて、小脳のニューロンはほぼ結晶構造のようにきちんと整列しているのだ。 百科事典や教科書を見ると、「小脳の機能は身体の動きを制御することである」と書かれている。もちろん、小脳にそういう機能があることに疑いの余地はない。しかし最近の科学者たちから、この長らく続いてきた見方はいささか近視眼的に過ぎるのではないか、という声が上がりはじめている。...
