INTRODUCTION As the effects of climate change and biodiversity loss have become evident, scientists are increasingly emphasizing the importance of diverse disciplines and knowledge systems to address social–ecological problems (Bennett et al., 2017; Norström et al., 2020; Syddall et al., 2021; West et al., 2020).

Research ABSTRACT Increasingly there is recognition of the need for new governance and decision-making models in natural resource management that uphold the rights and knowledge systems of Indigenous peoples. These models would support access to and sovereignty over natural resources including fisheries and wild harvested foods.
