Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I started out writing press releases and blog articles for a consulting company in 2016. Now I'm a full-time copywriter.

How is social media changing news?

News is shorter and punchier now. We've cut out a lot of the fluff. Anything worth saying can be said in a few characters.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Bridget Jones

What does it mean to be a journalist?

A journalist, in the true sense, conveys information with as much objectivity as possible. I'm not a journalist. I'm a writer.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email is the best way to reach me.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Google drive, Grammarly, AP Style guide and Microsoft Word.

Who do you wish followed you?

Josh Groban, Sarah Brightman, Bishop Robert Barron, Evanna Lynch, JK Rowling, Stephen King, Steve Kloves

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes. I wrote theater reviews.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

My article about motherhood in Harry Potter which I don't think ever got published is still my favorite because my mom loved it.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Read everything you can then start writing. Read. Write. Repeat until you feel confident enough to show your words to someone.

When's the best time to pitch you?

I'm usually available in the late evenings. 3 pm-5 pm.

What's your favorite drink?

Coca-Cola Zero Sugar.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

In a bookstore or a coffee shop. Possibly at the movie theaters seeing something new.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Bounding into Comics has some good articles. I find myself reading some articles in The Mary Sue as well.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

Entertainment is not the same as celebrity gossip. Entertainment is about worlds and stories in books, movies, comics etc. that people love.
