When something terrible happens, folks will often scramble to assign it meaning — the shooting that took place in Montreal this week is no exception, for better and for worse. On Monday, a gunman began firing shots in Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood, killing police offer Mohamed Lamine Benredouane. A civilian, Michel Mizrahi, was also killed when he was caught in the crossfire. It was a really hard, sad day for my city.

Pride month is here, and it arrived just after Statistics Canada has confirmed something devastating: the disinformation campaigns against trans rights are working. “Fewer people agreed that individuals should be free to express their gender however they choose in 2025 compared with 2018,” according to the article published in Statistics Canada’s Juristat in late May.
