Late in the afternoon of April 27, 1984, a tornado with estimated winds of 150 to 200 mph touched down in the Town of Clayton, leaving a path of destruction as it traveled northeast through Winneconne, the Town of Menasha, Greenville and Freedom. An Appleton school teacher was killed by flying debris and 13 others were injured. Two dozen homes were destroyed in Winnebago and Outagamie counties, and roughly 100 houses and farm buildings were damaged by the vicious storm.
