Self-harm (SH) behaviour has a 20% prevalence in young people (YP), of which 60% are depressed and more likely to develop repetitive SH, aggravating suicide risk. Mechanisms of repetitive SH remain poorly understood, hindering the development of targeted interventions. Recent evidence highlights SH mental imagery as a putative cognitive mechanism maintaining SH (Lawrence et al., 2023; Ji et al., 2024).
