Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

As a sports writer at a local newspaper my second year in college.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

No. Wish I had. Like Clark.

How is social media changing news?

Everybody talks about the risks, but forgets about the advantages. When news are important is a huge box of resonance.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Clark Kent, of course.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Writing about what people don't want you to write. For the last year I wrote mainly about the new business bubbles.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

Not much of a # person.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Via email.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Hearst Magazines propietary software.

What's your favorite social network?

Linkedin.

Who do you wish followed you?

People interested in the anthropology of business.

Why did you become a journalist?

Too many Superman comics while growing up.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes. I was a photographer.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Most of my work on Emprendedores. I do enjoy our business outreach.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Write. And do not listen to the people that say that journalism is dead.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Any time as long as the pitch suits the content I usually write about.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

Any pitch involving a founder writing an honest email about his/her business.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Every day I get pitches from PR and communication firms that do not know what I write about and what the magazine I write for is about.

What's your favorite drink?

Lemonade. With ginger.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Making up stories with my kids.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The New Yorker. I'm not being snob.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That all startups are the same and that only technological startups matter. I'm a huge fan of small giants.
