Delhi Photo Company, the photo studio, was founded by Bhagwati Prasad in Delhi in 1937 in the newly built buildings on Janpath in Connaught Place. It was one of the first studios in New Delhi. After Independence, the studio was appointed as official photographer to the President of India [and] received accolades and patronage from an array of eminent clients including many royal figures, and British officers and their family members.

Tall, good looking and very flamboyant, his presence commanded any space he entered. As a teenager in Delhi in the later 1960s, when the Statesman was still the English newspaper of choice, I would see his photographs regularly. I have never forgotten one image in particular.

In 2003, a painted portrait of Hindutva ideologue VD Savarkar was installed in Parliament, sparking an uproar. Objections were raised over the fact that he had been accused in the Mohandas Gandhi assassination case, even though he escaped being charged in the conspiracy. As the controversy raged on, it was also discussed by us members of Sahmat, the trust established in memory of activist-artist Safdar Hashmi.
