Analysis of men's & women's tennis performance finds differences from match format
SEATTLE, WA, AUGUST 9, 2015 - Quantitative analysis of the performance of men and women professional tennis players over the past five completed seasons shows for the first time that evidence of inconsistency in women's play is likely attributable to match format (e.g., best of three or five sets), not gender, Stephanie Kovalchik--an associate statistician with the RAND Corporation--today revealed at a session focused on analytics of women's sports at the 2015 Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM...
Afghanistan after the drawdown
With the wars in Iraq, Syria, Ukraine, and Yemen dominating headlines, Afghanistan appears to have gotten lost in the shuffle. Afghanistan seems passé, both in U.S. policy circles and among Americans in general. In 2014—for the first time since the 9/11 attacks—roughly half of Americans polled by Gallup thought that the United States should never have sent troops to Afghanistan.
Iraq, Afghanistan, and the U.S. military’s morale “crisis”
In April 2015, USA Today reported a disconcerting, if somewhat incongruous, finding about the Army’s morale. Despite a six-year, $287 million effort to make troops more optimistic and resilient, an Army survey found that 52 percent of soldiers scored badly on questions that measured optimism, while 48 percent reported having little satisfaction or commitment to their job. This study is only the latest of several such studies.

Iran's Goals in Syria
What is Iran doing in Syria? How important is Iran in the ground war? Where are Iranian forces concentrated? How many are there? What are they doing exactly? Some Iranians have been killed in Syria, including Iranian Revolutionary Guard General Mohammed Allahdadi in January 2015. But Iran does not appear to be committing major ground forces to the conflict. Tehran instead prefers to recruit Shiite militias from across the Middle East and even Afghanistan to fight in places like Damascus and Aleppo.
Mental health providers not well prepared to care for military veterans, study finds
Most community-based mental health providers are not well prepared to take care of the special needs of military veterans and their families, according to a new study by the RAND Corporation that was commissioned by United Health Foundation in collaboration with the Military Officers Association of America.
How to Best Realize Its Social Benefits
The auto industry has been moving toward more autonomous vehicles for years. Americans already drive cars with crash-warning systems, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping systems, and self-parking technology. Every major commercial automaker is conducting research in this area, and full-scale autonomous vehicles are predicted within 10–15 years — some say much sooner. Several states have passed laws to regulate use of such vehicles, and other states are considering legislation.
A New Year's Resolution: Target Practices That Undermine Weight Control
Although many will vow to lose weight in the coming year, most will inevitably fail, not from lack of motivation or knowledge but from insuperable forces that undermine the best of intentions. Until now, those who undermine these intentions have been free to do whatever they can to trip up would-be weight watchers. No matter how extensive their efforts, the blame and responsibility has been levied on those who fail.
Did North Korea Hack Sony?
There is strong suspicion that North Korean state-sponsored hackers were behind the cyber attack on Sony Pictures Entertainment just before Thanksgiving. Since June of this year, North Korea has made serious efforts to stop the release of Sony Pictures's movie The Interview, which depicts the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, in terms Kim would not want the world and especially his elites to see.
Ignore Flap Over Obama Letter
An alleged letter from President Barack Obama to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has prompted consternation not just in Washington, but also Tel Aviv and Riyadh.
As U.S. Energy Booms, Don't Forget About Roadway Infrastructure
Unconventional fossil fuel production, including the use of hydraulic fracturing (popularly known as “fracking”) to obtain oil and gas from shale deposits, has risen dramatically over the last decade in the United States. Most scenarios anticipate continued growth of natural gas production in the coming decades (PDF). Many states and communities are reaping the benefits of the associated increased economic activity.
